Spanish guard Rubén Domínguez commits to Texas A&M basketball

Spanish guard Rubén Domínguez has announced his commitment to Texas A&M.

At 6-foot-6 and 190 pounds, Domínguez has plenty of international experience playing professional basketball as a teenager.

He won a silver medal with Spain at the 2018 FIBA U16 European Championship, averaging 8.9 points per game.

At the 2019 FIBA U16 European Championship, he was named tournament MVP after averaging 13.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists to lead Spain to a gold medal. He won MVP over France’s Victor Wembanyama, the future of the San Antonio Spurs.

While this was six years ago, the potential is still there for Domínguez to bring his game back to that level. Playing at the collegiate level will be a different style of play than the professional basketball he’s used to, but if Bucky McMillan can find a way to get his game to translate, he could be a difference maker next season.

He also led Spain to a fifth-place finish at the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup, averaging 18.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game.

Most recently, he played in 27 games for Bilbao in Spain and averaged 6.3 points and 1.6 rebounds while shooting 39.6 percent from 3-point land on over three attempts per game and 86.2 percent from the free-throw line.

The 22-year-old will be one of the oldest players on the team next season, but he still has four years of eligibility left in the NCAA.

Admissions for athletes appear to be automatic. Regular students apply and most after long waits are not admitted. Question: what are admission rules for athletes vs regular students?

Euro pro league is rugged so he should be able to adapt quickly to SEC. Great pickup! I am getting fired up for some Buccee-Ball!

I'm excited about the team that Bucky is putting together. But if anyone needed any more evidence that this is no longer college, but a professional league, this is it. I wonder what his college major will be?

This is getting hilarious. Instead of playing American college then going to the European league, he is doing the exact opposite. So now we have a professional basketball player playing for us as a freshman.

It's perfect! 4 years of eligibility and if he starts producing big numbers he either goes NBA or gets NIL money.

Interested to see how often announcers do the LATAM vs Peninsular pronunciation of his surname. Listening to Dave South say "Domingueth" seems like it would have been funny.
