Former TE Jamie McCoy outlines his expectations for A&M's offense
As Mike Elko & Co. eye the start of the 2025 campaign in Aggieland, former Texas A&M TE Jamie McCoy joined us on Tuesday's edition of TexAgs Live to share what he expects to see from a potentially run-heavy Aggie offense this fall.
Key notes from Jamie McCoy interview
- If I had to put a number to how I’m feeling about this season, I’d say a 9/10. I think we have as much talent as we’ve ever had. We have guys with experience coming back who can pour it into the young guys. It seems like we have everything in our grasp that we want to do as an offense, whether that’s bringing two tight ends to block and go run-heavy or having a blocking and passing tight end for play action. We also have speedster guys who can do what I did in terms of blocking on the edge and going out to be a receiver. I think if our offensive line and running backs can do what I think they can do, this tight end room is in a great spot to help this team get to the aspirations they’re shooting for at the end of the year.
- I think the WR room is a little of both. You never want to lose a receiver like Noah Thomas, with his height and experience, but what I saw in the spring game from KC Concepcion and Mario Craver, both of those guys look more than ready. I love their speed aspect, getting across the field. There was another guy in the spring game, new to the team, who was making plays. I know he scored a touchdown and had two or three contested catches that were tough. Guys like that, you love seeing people put their hands in the pile. I think it was Izaiah Williams. From the outside looking in, I’m telling myself this guy wants it. He may have just played himself into a smaller role he can grow into.
- You hate to lose Thomas, but I think these guys are more than capable. I see us being run-heavy on teams, getting an early lead and running the clock. These guys are more than capable of doing that, and I’m excited for them to show it.
- Marcel Reed has expectations from me, but he should have them for himself. I want to see growth in all areas. I’ve been in situations with a QB competition where you may not be the starter, but you have to stay ready. There’s a different aspect when you come in knowing you’re the guy.
- I don’t know if you watch UFC, but once you get the belt, you gain momentum, and now you’re the champ who has to go show that and prove it. It translates into your practice and work. For Reed, I want to see him keeping the offense in a prime position, staying ahead of the chains. I want to see his feet settle. A lot of times last year, he had errant throws because his feet weren’t set or he was scrambling. Besides that, I’d like to see more accuracy on his deep balls and intermediate throws. All of these things can be easily corrected with hard work in the offseason. Knowing it’s your team, I expect him to do that. With Mike Elko taking charge of the defense, hopefully Collin Klein has been in Reed’s ear and has him ready.
- If all of the running backs are healthy, I think they’re a 10/10, maybe even an 11/10. Le’Veon Moss displayed everything you want from a running back and an SEC running back as far as they want to, power running, not being denied and the short yardage. That was something we struggled with late in the year. Not to the detriment of Amari Daniels, but when we lost Moss, we lost some of our identity. With a full running back room, the sky's the limit. Each of these guys has their niche that they do better than the others. When you put it together on top of incoming talented freshmen...
- You’re talking to the eternal optimist here: I think we should beat everyone 100-0. That’s not always the case, but we can do some great things this year. If we get by the Notre Dame game, I think we’re sailing.
- My biggest question for the team is identity. I feel like I know what we want to be. I know what it was like when Elko was here as the defensive coordinator. If somebody got something in the first half, you knew that would be taken away in the second half. He was great at confusing young quarterbacks, making them think they had something, then switching everything at the snap.
- I’m not concerned with the defense, but in terms of identity, I want to know what type of team we’ll be. I want to see a team that plays hard-nosed football, gets a lead, maintains a lead of 10-14 points and puts the defense in a position where they have to throw the football to catch up. When we know what they have to do, I think Elko is one of the best at taking that away and making it confusing and hard on you. We have the defensive pieces to put that pressure.
- Special teams-wise, I think we have a new kicker and a great punter. I think it will be embracing our identity, putting it on tape and hopefully getting the win.
- I’m planning on going to the Notre Dame game so I can visit Chicago. I’m trying to be at all of the home games. We definitely need our get-back for Auburn after last year. That was bull. We need our get-back on South Carolina. LaNorris Sellers is good, but I think he’s overrated. Great talent, but I think they got off with one. Their coach was singing the song at the end of the game. We’re not the team to do that.
- LSU is going to be tough. That one’s circled. If we can go to Baton Rouge and get a win, that’d be icing on the cake.
- Then, at the end of the year, you have Austin. They’re already talking about Heisman hopes and an automatic bid to the playoff. I hate them talking about that, so if we can do anything to keep them out or bump them lower, I would love to do that.
