Key notes from Liucci’s thoughts on Williams

  • Scooby Williams didn’t move the needle for me a whole lot when A&M added him from Florida. He wasn’t tremendously impactful when A&M added him, but Jay Bateman and Sean Spencer wanted to bring him with them. When you saw him in pads and in practice, he looked like an SEC linebacker. I think he’s the best sideline-to-sideline guy on the defense. He chases, tracks the ball and closes ground.

  • I want Dalton Brooks to be that guy, too, but Williams is that guy. I think Williams is a potential difference-maker for the A&M defense. Williams coming out of the game against Auburn was a massive blow to the chances of beating Texas. He was a non-factor against Texas, and I think he came out of the game really early.

  • He played last year with a torn meniscus. Very painful. It happened against Notre Dame. If he was putting that on tape playing well below 100 percent, I’m excited to see what he does this year. Will Lee III, Cashius Howell and Taurean York are in there, but the other guy having the most impact on the defense is Williams. I think he is that good. I think the A&M defense is different when he is on the field. I think he complements York well, too.
