Key notes from Randy Bullock interview

  • I recently retired from the NFL. I'm still getting calls from the NFL, but I'm enjoying being a dad and being in one place. It ran its course, and it's time for me to focus on a life outside of football.

  • My time in the NFL & at A&M, it went so fast. It was completely awesome. I remember Draft Day in College Station. My teammates and family at the Traditions Club, waiting for a phone call, hoping for a phone call. Being a kicker, you don't know if you are actually getting one. Maybe you go undrafted. I heard from Houston early in the draft. Minnesota called me, saying they were taking me in the sixth round, and still hadn't heard from Houston. Then the phone rang, and I was back home. It was an awesome experience. Growing pains early in my career, the first time I really experienced any failures was when Houston released me. But I think it actually helped me play longer. If you can't handle the highs and lows, I remember talking to Coach Gary Kubiak, there are two ways this is going to go, north or south. As a young player, regardless of position, it's how you handle adversity.

  • I think it's one of those things, it's confidence. It's preparation. It's your offseason. It is everything. It was a blast. Everything fell into place for me, not for any reason other than hard work. It was a lot of fun, it gave me an opportunity to make a living doing what I love, and it was just overall a blast. You take it for granted. Because you get an opportunity, go back and talk through this stuff, and it's like Wow, that was 12 years ago, but it was in the blink of an eye.

  • I’ll help some guys in the local area. As I got older, it wasn't as easy to get on the high school fields to train, so I worked with the guys. I worked with the John Cooper School here in the Woodlands, and they gave me access to the fields, and I tried to help them. Once you get to about your early 30s, they aren't just looking to open the door to let you be on campus.

  • The 2010 victory vs. Nebraska, to me, that was probably the best college football atmosphere we had. For the longest time, that was when everything started rolling for us. We beat OU, t.u., and Nebraska. That was 2010. It was just an awesome experience for us. It was the first time we all rushed Kyle Field. You see that on all the highlight videos, it was just an unbelievable experience.

  • If there is a guy struggling, we will reach out. It's a pretty small network; everybody kind of knows everybody, and everybody does things the way they do them. You may see it your way, it's kind of like a golf swing, but there isn’t one way to do it. You kind of just have to perfect your craft in a way that you do it.

  • Blocking out the noise early in my career, it is hard. It is harder for your family than it is for you. You don't want your performance or anything you've done to have an effect on anybody else. If you have an issue with me, send me a hate message on Twitter, but don't call my mom's house. I'm a grown man. I don't live there. There are some weirdos out there, but it is what it is. It comes with the territory, and you just try to keep your head up and do whatever you need to do.

  • I am really excited about this season. My first game back was the big rivalry game this past year. Unfortunately, the outcome was not what we wanted. I'm really excited about the roster and the coaching staff. The city itself has changed so much. I'm looking forward to getting back there more often and experiencing some game days. After being at that one this past year, I wish all of those guys the best. Health, that is the biggest thing. If we can keep everybody healthy, everything else will take care of itself.

Randy Bullock had a great 12-year NFL career from 2012 to 2023. I wish him the best of luck in his post-NFL life.
