Key notes from Jamie Morrison interview

  • You learn from these losses. You learn more during losses than wins. Take the things that were an anomaly. There were some against SMU. We just need to move forward. That SMU match was not indicative of the way we play volleyball. It was a tough schedule, and I am proud that we fought being on the road with only 24 hours to practice. We weren’t where we needed to be and fought against a very good volleyball team. Going forward, we need to harp on the things that got us to where we were.

  • The thing that stands out is the plays within the game. Some of the plays were the opposite of what we do. We were not displaying everything we’ve practiced in that first match, but I think we responded well in the second game.

  • There are two pieces to respond to. There is a wake-up call that we need to be able to go do this night in and night out. It needs to become a part of your identity and who you are, so that you don’t even think about that in those big moments. That is just what you do. The second piece was that that was just a tough road trip. Four road games in a week. There was a recharge that had to happen. We’ve talked about recharge and refine. We need to go back to doing the things that make us, us. We saw a lot of that happen at practice yesterday and hope we see it this weekend.

  • I would’ve preferred that the wake-up call be the SMU match, and the TCU match was a win. But if it is a wake-up call, the way we go about our business, how we practice, it will end up being a net positive in the end.

  • You have to find windows to recharge yourself. It is harder and harder to find. This job pulls you in different directions all the time. Refilling your soul is very important. For me, sometimes you need to listen to the advice you give your players. So, you need to cut out some time to be with family or be with yourself.

  • Back in the day, I’d want to be around 50 people, as you become a head coach, you are pulled in different directions, so you really value the alone time. But also, time with my family is a big one. I always find that being physically active, I feel better. It is hard to carve out that time, but it is important.

  • Emily Hellmuth knew when to take a risk. Slow down their offense. I am proud of how she went about her business in that match. We’ve gone back and watched the video, and you see what she is capable of.

  • The third set of SMU and on, it was like a car that started to get going, then it sputtered a bit. But there were a lot of different people contributing. You have not seen our best yet. It will come. Where are all the cylinders of the car set and speeding?

  • The exhibition against Baylor was a home game. We have not had a home game in a long time. Seven straight road games. In five different places, some back-to-back involved. We are excited to sleep in our own beds, be in front of the 12th Man. Home court really matters. We had a tough schedule, but it will make us better. The pressure might get let off being at home where people are cheering for us.

  • Come out and watch on Thursday or Friday at 6 p.m. or Saturday at 3 p.m. Finally, an opportunity to not watch us on TV. To see us in person. Super appreciative of the support the fans bring every game.
