Undefeated Aggies rise to No. 6 in latest Associated Press poll

Now 4-0 for the first time since 2016, the Fightin' Texas Aggies are up to No. 6 in the AP poll after defeating Auburn on Saturday at Kyle Field. Next for Mike Elko & Co. is "Operation Blackout" as Mississippi State comes to Aggieland in Week 6.

For the first time since 2016, Texas A&M is 4-0.

As a result, the Aggies moved up three spots to No. 6 in the Week 6 edition of the Associated Press poll.

Additionally, Mike Elko & Co. are up to No. 5 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, their first top-five mark in a major poll since the coaches ranked them fifth in Week 3 of 2021.

Unlike the 41-point output vs. Notre Dame in Week 3, the Maroon & White dispatched Auburn back to The Plains with a suffocating defense.

And if you ask Elko, that’s plenty enough reason for optimism.

“Does anybody want to ask a question about, like, us being 4-0 for the first time since 2016?” the Aggie head man quipped postgame on Saturday. “Or how did the defense bounce back? Or how ‘bout you held them to 176 yards on offense, and you had five sacks, and they were 0-for-12 on third down and 0-for-2 on fourth down, and you got the return game going again?”

“I don’t mean to sound like somebody else, but my gosh, will you guys stop being so dreadful and gloomy?”

Sure, the 16-10 win on Saturday was far from perfect, but as the cliche goes:

They don’t ask “how.” They ask “how many.”

For the Aggies, the answer to that is now “four” on their quest to a double-digit win total for just the first time since 2012. The general consensus is that a 10-win SEC team will find itself in the College Football Playoff come December.

That plateau is certainly attainable, even after an anxiety-inducing nail-biter of a victory in Week 5.

Saturday featured several close contests and even a couple of upsets, allowing the Aggies to continue their ascent.

Former No. 8 Florida State fell at Virginia on Friday, while LSU, Georgia and Penn State all lost in top-20 showdowns despite holding their respective top-10 rankings.

As the season enters Week 6, the Ags are among the 10 SEC teams currently ranked in the AP’s top 25, joining No. 4 Ole Miss, No. 5 Oklahoma, No. 9 Texas, No. 10 Alabama, No. 12 Georgia, No. 13 LSU, No. 15 Tennessee, No. 16 Vanderbilt and No. 19 Missouri.

Up next is another conference test as Mississippi State comes to College Station after falling to Tennessee in overtime. Dubbed “Operation Blackout,” the Aggies and Bulldogs will meet at 6:30 p.m. CT on Saturday.
