A&M to honor Bubba Bean, '75 team with throwback uniforms on Saturday

A four-year starter at A&M, Bubba Bean rushed for 2,500-plus yards during his career in Aggieland. Before Mike Elko's squad honors the 1975 Southwest Conference co-championship team by wearing specially designed throwback uniforms, we caught up with the Aggie great.

Key notes from Bubba Bean interview

  • Knowing 1975 was going to be a special year, I don’t think so. I think it was a combination of the hard work we had put in from when we came in as freshmen.

  • To be honored this weekend, it is kind of interesting. It is bittersweet. We have lost a lot of players on that team. A kit of players who have passed away. It is bittersweet.

  • It is always nice to have a chance to be able to recognize the things we did back then. It’s hard because of so many guys we lost. It will be nice to see the guys who do come back. I stay in contact with quite a bit of them still. We are old men now.

  • It was something I did not expect. It was something that happened. The fact that we beat Texas, and I was one of the people who helped that be achieved. They thought it would be nice for it to be the cover of a magazine. I get Sports Illustrated covers from time to time for me to sign, but I tell them I will only sign them if they come from A&M. I am proud of that. I have moved on since being there.

  • I hate to be blunt. I haven't been able to see the Aggies much. I have a grandson who plays at Texas Southern. I have been recovering. I got to see his first game last weekend. So my Saturdays are spent following him when I can, when I am able to travel. I check in on the school at times and make sure we are OK.

  • Yes, RC Slocum recruited me. While I was getting recruited by Kansas State. I may have been a sophomore in high school. I was with him until the day Coach Emory Bellard called him and offered him the job here. It has sort of been history since that. I still talk to him and play golf with him once in a while.

I had the honor of coaching his son. He was a good running back but preferred to play defense.

All I can say is you can't a finer person than Bubba Bean.

I was born in 63 so he was my idol growing up.

I was at that 1975 game versus Texas when A&M won 20 to 10 at Kyle Field.
When Bubba bean made that breakaway run, which was featured on the sports illustrated cover, the crowd went wild.
Of all the A&M games I've attended are watched on TV. I'll never forget this one.
