Key notes from G Guerrieri interview
- Texas A&M soccer is bringing in a top-10 high school class. Automatically, the team is better than it was last fall as far as talent goes. A lot of things are going well for A&M. Now it just matters in finding the new head coach.
- I am glad I don’t have to deal with the transfer portal and all of that now. It is stupid. I feel for my old staff because they are burning the candle at both ends right now.
- When the internet started, I was at A&M. I was one of the first emails that came across for Aggies athletics when A&M became part of the internet lexicon. Now, 33 years later, I’ve had to transfer my data over. All of that is going on.
- Right now, I’m just trying to focus on this charity golf tournament. It is something specifically designed to help families in the Brazos Valley. There is so much you can learn from being an athlete. A big part of my background was being a competitive soccer player collegiately and professionally. How to win. How to lose. How to recover. How to train hard. How to set your life up to do things.
- The Calvary Youth Soccer Club started in 2017 with some parents here in town. Both my boys played. Dr. Seabolt has done a wonderful job. They’ve gone from four teams to 21 teams, and it is a youth academy that is bursting at the seams because we don’t have enough field space at Veterans Park for soccer.
- A big part of it is this golf tournament to raise money to keep fees low and to help with scholarships for those who can’t afford them. It has been a labor of love and something I have been on the periphery of.
- The coaches we have are outstanding. They are role models. To play for the Calvary means you are playing for the best in this part of the world.
- They get to pay half of what they normally would because of this golf tournament. They get to pay half to a third of what people pay in Houston or Dallas.
- Our charity golf tournament is on the Monday after the Aggies win the SEC championship. It’ll be at the Traditions club. It is a spectacular course. Put a group together. Free beer with your mates. It is a great way to spend some time and raise money that all stays here in Bryan-College Station.
- This event has doubled and doubled in size. Everyone has done a wonderful job. If you go to CoachGGolf.com, that will take you directly to the page. You don’t have to play, but you can still help out.
- I can’t say how much it means to me as a parent, too. Knowing my boys came through this and seeing the success they’ve had going through this. Learning all the things about hard work, and the hard work that goes behind the scenes to make it happen. Playing golf is fun, but the benefits are amazing.
- We have made our colors maroon. TexAgs has been a great sponsor. It is a lot of fun. Knock on wood, the weather has always been good. Come on that Monday and be with your buddies. I have some time on my hands.
