Any great 100 runner can be a great 200 runner. Any great 200 runner can be a great 400 runner. And great 400 runner can be a great 800 runner. After that it breaks down. Just saying, those girls can run any sprint they want.

Wow, Shadow Creek now in the girls' driver's seat. I thought Atascocita had a 4x4 but they don't.

Flo Mo, we sure can run.

Probably will win a few boys titles soon as Cooks son will be a Freshman next year.

Lol you got me there! But Macy Wingard was the big favorite! Her first time making state in the 1600! I'm just biased cause she's an Aggie now

UIL website showing Atascocita girls finished with only 40 points. Did somebody get disqualified?

Also, showing that Houston Lamar won 6A with 32 points, placing in only 2 events, including the 4x4 win. Never seen a point total that low win the meet.

It's not showing Atascocita's points in the 4x100, that's weird, that's 16 points. Still puts them behind Shadow Creek! And wow those guys results for 6A are some of the most interesting and wild team scores. 10 schools within 10 points of first! All Houston Lamar needed was points in 2 relays. 6A is that deep

Scanning the results I see a Jalen Lott finished 2nd in 4A high jump and long jump. Just did a search and looks like he is indeed the son of James Lott from Refugio. Won an NCAA high jump championship and played football for t.u.

I jumped against him in the Texas Relays in high school. It was a cold night and in the ultimate power move he won the competition wearing sweat pants. Then he took his sweat pants off and jumped 7' 2.5".

James was a high school friend. The rest of the story… our track coach had to give him a talkin' to take off his warm-ups to set the national record. The rest is history as they say!

Well my daughter did great finishing 2nd in the 800. She had the top qualifying time but her legs just weren't there yesterday. Finished 9th in the 1600, 11 seconds off her PR from regionals. I'm sure there were a lot of factors at play, but it just wasn't her day. Super proud of her getting this far, an amazing accomplishment since soccer is her primary sport. Looking forward to see her back as a sophomore next year with a little more experience.

My main takeaway from the meet: UT needs to step up their track and field / soccer stadium game. Holy hell what a dump that place is, especially compared to ATM's track complex. I know neither sport are money makers, but it's a bad look to host the state finals in a stadium that is surpassed by most high school / district level multipurpose stadiums.

Congrats to her! That 800 race was awesome and I'm sure some of those girls she raced against in both races have hundreds of more races over her! She did amazing and it's not often a freshman goes in and medals at the 6A level. So much to gain from the experience!!

Yeah aside from the parking being over a mile away, the only benefit of that stadium is the size! Concessions are overpriced, getting into the stadium takes forever. They make it much more complicated then it has to be!

Last year at the state meet, they wouldn't let me enter through a spectators only gate cause I was a coach. Mind you I was walking in with my mother who's paralyzed, partially blind, and mute. They had to go get someone higher in charge to allow me to push her in through the spectator entrance.

Her legs were fine. She ran a 2:08. She went out too fast in the 800 and paid for it. The 1600 is a really hard double. She had zero chance of winning, and maybe just got a little mentally down. It doesn't matter one bit. She can run anywhere in America with that 2:08. The goal now is to not get injured or burn out. My daughter runs the 800 in D1, and has never run close to 2:08. But lots of girls she ran with peaked as freshmen, and they got hurt, and she still competes. So remember that the state meet is a bonus round. Qualifying for it it ANYTHING in 6A is a phenomenal accomplishment. You're not entitled to be there. I could start listing 6A kids who are unbelievable runners who never got to compete once at state. Two 4:55 milers who never made it. A 2:09 800 runner. A 10.22 100m guy. The list is long. Heck, I don't even know what happened to Elizabeth Brooks, the girl from Katy who ran 2:10 as a freshman 2 years ago. Maybe you can tell me.

And I watched Kailey Littlefield run that 800 for 4 years, win 3 state championships, and lose her senior year, running between 2:07 and 2:09 the whole time. She's phenomenal, is a college freshman now, and didn't even get invited to the invitational heat of the meet...cause she's too slow. 2:07 isn't worth anything at a big conference meet. The point is, never make a hint of an excuse, never push too hard, and never get disappointed when a step backwards is taken. Appreciate what you are seeing, and let the gift play.

Oh, and the Texas Relays and the state championship are terribly run, embarrassingly so. Taylorswift and I shared how bad it was last year. The tickets, parking, disabled access, concessions, preferential treatment of their own athletes. They make the athlete's coach purchase tickets. Ridiculous. Last year they scheduled a baseball game during the meet and used the same parking garage during rush hour, and wouldn't let me use my handicap tag.

You are right, we are damn proud of her. Because of soccer, this is not something she does a lot and doesn't have a lot of experience but also has high expectations of herself. We just love watching her compete and give her all, which she does in everything…our only hope and expectation is for her to do the best she can and squeeze a little fun out of it and enjoys what she works so hard for. She will be back next year.

Regarding Brooks, that girl is a beast…apparently she posted on one of the social media platforms early in the season something about leaving the Katy team because her coaches were narcissistic and prioritizing relays over individual races. Not sure what happened there but her and her older sister who ran the 800 both quit the team.

Wow. Thanks for the info. UIL really needs a 4x8. Almost without fail, the 6A title goes to a team that finishes 1st or second in the 4x4. A few years ago Flower Mound won state by sweeping the 3200 and 1600, but you can imagine how impossible that would be. Elizabeth Brooks is a track athlete, but the 800 for HS girls is still primarily a distance event. It would really give these coaches something to think about. You should have to do more to win a state meet than put together a good 4x1, 4x2, or 4x4 team and a few individual events. 4x8 would level the playing field for the distance programs.

Elizabeth Brooks ran 2:22 today at the Clash of Texas…

From what I can tell and have heard, the Katy coaches are great people and they have really been killing it on the track and in cross country lately! Their women got 3rd at state in cross and they've had a very solid group in track this year! What would you tell college coaches when they ask why you sat a season and quit… she was a monster her freshman and sophomore year! She's only got one year of high school left.

I'd love to see a 4x800 and put the relays to regular scoring instead of double! This would really emphasize the track teams with a lot of depth to really spread out the relays. You're right, now all you gotta do is get a couple relays into state to win it all. I wanna see a more balanced team with multiple scoring options win!

Yeah, I don't understand why the 2nd tier athletes should be getting double points. It would have a nice trickle down effect for you, too.

Our guys ran 7:51 4x8 this season, and not a single one made it past area in anything.

Why do relays have a different points system from other events? Was it ever same as Individual events?

I have noticed too that many summer track coaches put a emphasis on the relays.

Not sure exactly when I started, but been like that all my life. And yeah the thing for me is that you take away some athletes from shining in an individual event or getting a huge PR in an individual environment. If the relays were scores like invidual event it would reward teams with great coaching and more overall depth! Coaches are forced to focus on relays nowadays. With them being scored double, relays are what decide district, area, regional, and state champions

Been that way since at least 1961.

And on other topics - Has there ever been a state meet with such spectacular times and distances on a single day ? I don't think so.

And when will Tate Taylor turn pro ? This summer ? next year ? I doubt he ever runs collegiately.

I think the emphasis on the relays started when they added the 4x200 whenever that was. With only 2 relays you had a lot of extra spots filled in the sprints.

Makes no sense to have 135 sprinters at the state meet and 27 distance runners. Should have a 4x8 and ditch the 4x2.

I am full of questions, lol or thoughts. Why would High school have a 4x200m when that is not a race in College.

Kind of reminds me of high school baseball playoffs when i was in high school and if both teams did not agree on three games playoff it auto went to 1 game playoff. Team with more pitching depth gets screwed.
