Few things in order of concern:
1) We're still not good enough 5v5 from the top all the way to the bottom.
This issue is multi-faceted and widespread: injuries (Bichsel, Seguin, Duchene, Harley, Lundqvist, Benn, Erne) have cost us not only bodies, but time together to get comfortable with a new coach and system; players not elevating their game enough at 5v5 IMO; and continued lack of physical presence.
Injuries have really hurt this team this year. The one time I started to feel like it was starting to come together from a team perspective was when Bichsel and Seguin went down with major injuries. On top of that this team needs Duchene and Harley to be difference makers and they both have been completely off it for a while now. Some of this is due to the fact that they both missed time and still look lost in our system; Harley in particular is just completely caught in no mans land with what he he should be under Gully. Additionally, I think we still aren't quite gritty and tough enough. We have gotten better, don't get me wrong. Adding Mikko, Hrycky, Faksa and even Robo to an extent has increased our physical presence, but we need more.
2) Otter has to be better.
I think Otter is a very good goaltender, but this year in particular and situationally he needs to be better. For some reason it seems like when we need a huge save or a massive game for us he just doesn't quite deliver. He has set his bar far above what he is showing and he needs to get back to it in a hurry.
3) Talent of the defensemen.
Miro and Lindell are freaking studs and keep us afloat. Harley has been a stud for us, and I think Bichsel has the talent to be a stud for us, but with Harley being flat out bad this year and Bichsel being hurt, I seriously question the guys beyond them. Truth be told I think Petro and Lybu are turnstiles, and pretty much 7th D-man types. Lundqvist I like in a vacuum, but he needs a very specific partner and we don't have that guy right now.
I really think think we need a top six forward and another legit RHD, but the more I watch us the more I think a RHD might need to be the move.
Overall though, this season is not lost and we are still a good team, I just wonder if we are seeing a bit more of who really are because the PP isn't quite hitting on every cylinder anymore and injuries continue to be a real thing. My only question I guess moving forward would be how much do we "go for it" like we have been doing the last few years with the war machine that is Colorado in our own division right now? Is it worth it to send more prospects and draft capital out the door only to play Colorado in the first or second round?
