Before I was born, my mom worked for the Schulman family, who owned the Palace and Queen theaters in downtown Bryan.

Once a year, we would visit old Mrs. Schulman and she would let the kids watch a movie with free candy while she visited with my folks. The theater would be basically empty and we'd have our run of the place.

One of the movies we saw -- can't remember if it was at the Palace or Queen -- was "Viva Max."

Nice story. Love the history of this "small" town. Any other stories?

My cousin was the manager of the movie theater in Manor East Mall. We got a few early showings of big hits like Jaws and Star Wars.

Here's the story. A neighborhood mom was going to drop me and her son off at the Fun Club at the Santa Rosa Theatre in Houston one Saturday. Parents would drop you off, pick you up about dark having had the entire day to themselves. Well the theatre was sold out so she drove us over to the Broadway never looking at what was showing and assuming they had a fun club… they did not. We got a real education that Saturday.

I would not have been allowed to go to the Santa Rosa at all when I was a kid; the business model had changed a bit over the years. Looks like it was a nice theater in your time, though.

The Incredible Mr. Limpet

During WWII, Don Knotts falls into the ocean at Coney Island, turns into a fish, and helps the U.S. Navy defeat Nazi submarines because he can roar really loud. Even as a fish he wears glasses.

For some reason, it scared the crap out of 8-year-old me and gave me bad dreams about turning into a fish against my will.
