Viva Max was a moderately successful movie when it was released over 55 years ago, but it's a rare find on video or TV, because a lot of the humor (and the casting) would be considered politically incorrect today. It's about a Mexican general (played by Peter Ustinov) who, with a small band of loyal soldiers, attempts to re-take the Alamo in the 60's.
Before I was born, my mom worked for the Schulman family, who owned the Palace and Queen theaters in downtown Bryan.
Once a year, we would visit old Mrs. Schulman and she would let the kids watch a movie with free candy while she visited with my folks. The theater would be basically empty and we'd have our run of the place.
One of the movies we saw -- can't remember if it was at the Palace or Queen -- was "Viva Max."
