The jockey-less horse continued to run hard for the first 3/4 of the lap, then settled into a steady jog, then seemingly got lost and didn't finish the race.

If the horse runs on ahead without a jockey and finishes the race does it still count?

But if the jockey dies and stays in the saddle, he still wins the race.

The horse probably spooked when it saw a flock of seagulls. He just ran, he ran all night and day. He couldn't get away.
