Okay, the amp came in today. Played on it for about an hour on my Tele, Strat, and ES-330, so far. It is definitely giving me exactly what I was looking for. I have a Dr Z Maz 18 for playing rock. What i was wanting was something I could play some dirty blues on. I opted for this one because (A) I'm a gear snob and like boutique amps and (B) after looking at many of the 6L6 amp options in that range, this is the one that seemed to sound like I wanted. Also, I freaking LOVE the way it looks.
Initial reactions are as follows:
Aesthetics
Do I really need to? Looks like an old TV. the turquoise tolex with the white on the inside is freaking sexy as hell. That grill with the turquoise on the vertical seams just adds. Beautiful amp.
Sound
This amp has a high and low input, but I stick with the high. There is only a single channel, but it has 3 different voicings: Rhythm, Tweed, and Lead. The Rhythm gives you that classic blackface style clean with lots of headroom for a 20w amp. The Tweed adds a bit of mid hump and snarl, just like you would expect from a "tweed" amp. The Lead channel adds a little more high mids to the signal and tightens up the bottom end.
No EQ setting on the amp. Your sound is your guitar and the channel you choose. There is a tone knob, but I don't see myself rolling the tone off, much at all. To be honest, I don't see how it would be useful past halfway, but perhaps there could be a use out there. If you were to use this to play many types of music, you would probably need to make sure you have an EQ on your board.
The amp does not have a master volume, so turning up the volume adds more saturation and volume to the signal, by driving the tubes harder. Great for me, because I love natural tube overdrive. The overdrive is very open, not much compression if any at all. If you like more compression in your signal, you would need a compression channel
Reverb on board is fantastic. Still playing around with it in different ways.
Built-in Iron-Man II Attenuator is FANTASTIC. I have a Dr Z Brake Lite in my Maz, that I installed. I keep it on max, so I can enjoy great tone from my amp and not get the cops called on me. However, the Iron-Man II blows it out of the water when it comes to maximum volume you can roll off. You can basically use it as a master volume. The last two settings would allow you play this amp at max volume at midnight in an apartment. If you have family or kids that need to sleep at night, but want to play some blues, this thing is perfect.
Overall, very happy with it and excited to get to know it better. I will be going between this and my Maz, depending on my mood.
