Absolutely!

I hear this way too much and think some people confuse prowess, touch, or feel as "tone". That is not what I'm talking about at all.

Listen to this version of Over the Hills and Far Away. Listen to Jimmy's tone during the intro of the song. Listen to how punchy, clear, and percussive that neck pickup is. Yes, where he hits the string with his pick and how he hits the string is important, but you can't get that same tone on a dinky digital amp and a Chibson. You may be able to fenagle the controls to finally give you a similar tone, but it would be lacking in its depth, dynamic range of frequencies, and ability to simply roll the volume up to get a fantastic lead tone.

The only way to get that tone is, like I said earlier. A 100W Marshal head through multiple 4x12 cabs, a rangemaster treble booster, and a '59 LP. You then have to know how your volume and tone pots work together when in 50's style wiring on a gibson to dial in that exact tone.

Jimmy is able to convey his own sound through his fingers because the gear he's using and the current settings provide him with the dynamics he needs to then let his emotion and feel come through in his playing. He is able to expertly play with the natural overdrive of the tube amp by finding that great edge of breakup tone and dancing back and forth across that distortion line in the signal.

I'm sorry, but I don't care who the hell you have playing the guitar. If they turn the guitar knob all the way to 10, the tone knob to 10, and their amp volume/master at max, then I would agree it's harder to tell the difference. But the greats did not and do not play instruments like this.

I can't really tell if we're in agreement or not. All I know is that tone is at least 51% from the player.

Sounds like a Strat, to me.

Also, we are in a disagreement because I don't think tone is 51% in the hands.

Oh, I think we're more in agreement than you realize, but if you don't see it that way, then we should agree to disagree about whether or not we do actually agree.

Seriously, we both know that no one is going to change anyone's mind about the "true source of tone" by arguing on a message board, so I'll stop now. I'll give you this: that Zep video is badass and one of my favorite songs. I've never seen that particular video, and I love it. That's one of the Zep songs I play, but I can't get anywhere close to sounding that good. Thanks for posting it.

That is my favorite recording of that song and his neck pickup tone in that concert is the tone I've searched for my entire life.

I resemble that remark but that ain't blue and that's a Private Stock. I don't have the coin for those. Maybe if I sold all of my electrics. If that thing is under $10k I'd be shocked.

It's "Frostbite Glow". Two words that have never been used together.

That's a beauty. I'll bet it sounds like a Gibson with a stick of butter melted on the strings.

The one in the picture is a private stock version with that neck inlay. I'm liking the Hollowbody I just picked up though.

I sold a few guitars I wasn't playing that much and bought a new Taylor Gold Label 814 e Koa. I have some amazing guitars, but this might be the most well rounded acoustic guitar I've ever owned. Warm, lush, with amazing overtones. Other Taylor's seem to bright to me, but not this one. I'm having trouble putting it down.

Just picked this up on Reverb for $250, and now just have to wait for it: https://angelcityguitars.com/products/vahlbruch-kaluna-v2

I've been using the Vahlbruch Kaluna now for over a year and half, and this pedal has become my favorite pedal of all time. This v2 one adds a gain structure switch to the original design, so I am psyched about trying it.

For anyone who's never used an all tube pre-amp pedal, I highly recommend it. My signal goes into the lead channel of my Imperial MKII, which I set to be my optimum edge of breakup tone. There's something these pre-amp pedals are doing when you put them in between your guitar and an amp using an attenuator. I set my built in iron man attenuator on the second or third notch. That setting does sound like it rolls off a bit of punch and high end while making the low end a little darker.

When I drive the front of the amp with this pre-amp pedal that operates at 250v, it completely clears up the signal and gives me such amazing tone control with my volume and tone pots on the guitar. I'm able to roll off volume and still maintain clarity in the notes.

I can't recommend this pedal enough for anyone looking for that classic "Marshall" sound that you can put in front of basically any single channel amp to get you there. If I could only ever have one pedal, this one would be it. It has become an imperative piece of gear in my signal chain to attain the guitar tone I hear in my head.
