I mean... if that's the one that felt best to you, then there ya go!

There is nothing wrong with a Player II. MIM vs MIA has differences, but the ultimate goal is a guitar you love to play. My method has always been, if it sounds good unplugged and feels great to play, then plugging it in should also sound great. From there, you can always swap out pickups and hardware as you determine any changes you want. However, if it sounds dead unplugged, no amount of pickup swapping is making that dud into a great guitar, imo.

I would always look at the core aspects of the guitar to see if it's a keeper. First and foremost is the neck/fretboard. Shape, depth, width, and radius. If they are what you like, then that box is checked. Next, look at the fretwork and make sure it is up to par. Things like fret sprout or rough frets are something you shouldn't have to deal with on a new guitar. If the QC isn't up to par, then put that one back on the wall.

After my years of playing different tele's, I know my ultimate Tele sound seems to require the following:
  • Lightweight ash body: This has a direct affect on the resonance of the guitar, and I've just loved the sound of the ash bodies i've played over alder. When I strum a chord, I need to feel the vibrations fully in my left hand as well as in my body, from the contact with the guitar body and strap. If I don't, it's a dead guitar, for me.
  • Very thin finish (flash coat) or relic'ed: Thick poly finishes and even thick nitro finishes just suck up tone and resonance, imo. There is something open, resonant, and "woody" about all the relic'ed Tele's I've played that NOS finishes just never quite meet.
  • Low-mid Output Pickups: I also prefer the handwound relic'ed pickups I've played over the NOS ones. For example, my first #1 Tele was a Custom Shop Super Heavy Relic with HW relic'ed '63 Tele pickups. I later bought my NOW Candy Green '63 tele with the "same" pickups as my #1. They sounded incredibly different. Granted, there were a lot more differences than just the NOS vs relic'ed pickups, but they were still the same model.
I used to think I loved the 60's Oval C neck shape, because that was what my Gold Tele had. But then I later bought my Blackguard CS Tele with a Soft "V" neck profile, and this has now become my favorite neck profile.

My final test of a Tele actually comes from plugging it into my rig, then rolling the guitar volume down to 6-7 and tone around 8-9 to get to an edge of breakup tone, without changing channels or stomping on overdrive pedals. If I'm not able to maintain a level of depth, clarity and dynamics when doing this, then it will never be a guitar I play much.

Again, I'm just sharing the things I'm looking for in a Tele, but this is all 100% subjective.

Thanks for the feedback. I played a bunch of more expensive MIA Tele's at Tone Shop, most with the 9.5" neck radius. I liked them, but the one that felt best to me was a MIM Player II at a GC. Didn't plug it in so I don't know how it's pickups sound, but that can be fixed pretty easily. I wasn't seriously shopping at the time, but I've seen the guitar for sale for like $650. I know I don't want an HH Tele - not the sound I'd be going for.

If the MIM feels the best to you, go for that. IMO, a guitar that feels best to you, and makes you want to play it, is the best. Like Lath said, you can always change out pickups.

Thought I'd share this with my fellow guitar nerds.

About 4-5 months ago, I ordered a Faber aluminum stop tailpiece for my Les Paul. I've always been trying to mod it in any way I could to get the most vintage sound out of it that I can, and finally realized the tailpiece I had in my LP was different from the one that was on my custom shop LP before selling it. I had already installed the Faber Nashville to ABR-1 conversion posts and Faber ABR-1 bridge.

I've had the new one sitting in my guitar tool box since then and just never went to install it. Well, today I finally went ahead and installed it on this guitar. Holy crap! I had no idea the Zinc alloy one that my guitar came with was affecting the tonality of my guitar so much. This new Faber aluminum tailpiece is around 1/3 the weight of the original tailpiece and does everything to the tone that I would want. The guitar now has a better attack, I feel like I'm hearing a wider range of frequencies, and it just seems more articulate. I feel like all the strings now are coming out better, versus what I believed to be a very mid-ranged focus les paul, prior to the swap.

For anyone who owns a les paul from the years when Gibson was installing the zinc alloy tailpieces, I highly recommend looking into a quality aluminum one, like what Gibson used to install and, I believe, like they now install on newer guitars.

Finished up another pedal build. This time, it's a Superbolt clone with two transistor bias settings. Essentially it's two pedals in one. I'm also a big fan of the Man with No Name trilogy so wanted to use that theme. Switch down is traditional Superbolt overdrive settings (Blondie). Switch up is aggressive, spitty, nasty, dirty (Angel Eyes). JHS released a version with these more aggressive sounding bias settings called the Tacobolt. Fun fact, Mason Stoops played the Tacobolt on Red Dead Redemption 2.

It also has two gain settings that I incorporated with an RGB LED, basically emulating the JHS Red Remote.

I tried to do one of those Klon clones from Stewmac. That was a ton of soldering. And I somehow messed one up. I need to go back and troubleshoot, but only the light works on it.

For me it has come down to cold solder joints. Reflowing the solder might help. Alternatively, you can rig up an audio probe. Basically you route the output signal through a digital multimeter probe and touch different points in the audio path until the signal drops out. I built one recently and I figured out the issue in minutes.

Not sure if you're serious or not, but while it would take me a while, I'd be open to discussing.

New Guitar Day! Well, technically it came in yesterday, but it was already dark by the time I got it home.

Initial thoughts? Damn... this thing is the lightest guitar I've ever played and is resonant as hell. This light ash semi-hollow body is so light, the neck of the guitar is heavier, causing just the slightest neck dive. Granted, it's very minor an a little more center of the neck because it's the entire neck that is heavier than the body.

I am loving the feel and tones so far, but will hold off on my final thoughts until I've put some hours in it, this weekend.

I will say, this is yet another guitar I have bought off reverb that arrived HORRIBLY setup. I can't tell you how many $2,500+ guitars I have bought off Reverb that feel like they were setup by a 10-year-old. Maybe it's just me, but I can't believe someone is willing to invest that kind of money on a guitar and not know how to setup their own damn guitar correctly.

Every time I get one of these gems for such a good deal, I start to think the previous owner thought it wasn't that great for them because it played poorly. However, it only played poorly because of the god-awful setup. I have now put a new set of 9-42 D'addario NYXL's, adjusted the trust rod, set my string heights in a 9.5" radius (They were flat, when I pulled the guitar out), and set my intonation.

This guitar also has a fully glossed back of the neck, so I took some very fine steel wool and remedied that quickly. With all of that done, this guitar plays smooth as butter.

Nice! I am glad I'm not the only one to take some steel wool or a super light sanding sponge to glossy necks.

NPD... a Valeton GP-5!

I was watching Andertons and just couldn't resist picking this modeler up for $80 quid on Amazon.

I'm definitely an analog guy, but this is perfect for playing quietly via headphones when the family is sleeping or they get tired of loud noises coming from my office. I have it hooked up to my laptop so I can play over videos, etc.

There are tons of presets for just about every range of amp and uses the NAM open platform to download even more.

I opted for this versus the newer GP-50 because I can play through my amp if I want all the bells and whistles.

Worth checking it out!
