Right there with you guys. GREAT movie.
It's divided into three chapters/perspectives, and I thought the first one started out somewhat rocky - it's a little too reliant on plot, awkwardly skips ahead in time here and there, and Damon feels a bit out of place at first - but I thought the final two chapters, when the conceit really kicks in, were incredible (and you understand why the first chapter is structured like it is). Then, the end duel that everything is leading to absolutely delivers as well. This being Ridley Scott, it's very Gladiator-esque, but somehow even more brutal.
Speaking of, it's not just a straight period drama and then - boom - some action at the end. There's a decent amount of fighting/battles sprinkled throughout. Not a lot, but enough to keep the movie from being *just* castles and people on horseback. And yeah, it's all quite graphic too. Not overly graphic, but between the blood, the nudity, and the rape itself, it's certainly not for the squeamish.
Lastly, I just have to echo that Affleck is nails and was possibly the highlight for me. The entire cast is good (again, Damon being the weakest, though he still manages to pull it off), but Affleck is so good in what screen time he has, playing a character I've never quite seen him play. He's having a lot of fun, and you can really tell.
Overall, at two-and-a-half hours, it's a long one, but its originality and conceit definitely keeps you engaged. It's currently at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience I saw it with applauded at the end. It's just a solid, adult drama, which is something we don't see as much on the big screen in this day and age. To that end, I highly recommend taking advantage of the opportunity.
