In the last couple weeks, I have read:

One Year After by William Forstchen - It was good but not as great as One Second After. I will be starting The Final Day (book 3 of the series) later this week.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy - This was fine but it took me awhile to get used to McCarthy's writing style. A friend warned me about a couple scenes but they didn't end up bothering me much. I think I've become numb from reading other dystopian/horror books (Swan Song, The Passage, etc.).

I am currently in the middle of a random Frieda McFadden book as a brain break before picking up The Final Day.

Just finished the Dresden Files (those written to date at any rate), and started on Cornwell's The Winter King per recommendations on this thread.

Fortunately, unlike most of f13, "Books Read" is a great resource.

Twenty Years After, book 2 of the Three Musketeers trilogy. Love this stuff. I'll hit book 3 soon but I'm going to take a small break.

Time for Iron Gold.

Finally finished The Stand by Stephen King.

I read the expanded version which was a bit long. I really enjoyed it although there were some dragging parts.

Finished Red Rising and Golden Son. I'm still not sure how I feel about the series so far. There's been some really great parts and some things that just aren't hitting for me. On to morning star.

I read the first two Noobtown books by Ryan Rimmel. Both were entertaining. Sort of a Dungeon Crawler Carl Lite. Worthwhile.

Finished The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton. I thought it was good, but not quite JP or Sphere. Got really technical at times, which caused me to drift. I didn't really need to know the inner workings of an electron microscope. But the ending was solid. B+ for me.

Books read in 2025:

January
Slaughterhouse Five - Kurt Vonnegut (re-read)
A Wrinkle in Time - Madeleine L'Engle (re-read)
The Silent Patient - Alex Michaelides
Project Hail Mary - Andy Wier
Pines - Blake Crouch
Wayward - Blake Crouch

February
The Last Town - Blake Crouch

March
Dark Places - Gillian Flynn
Sharp Objects - Gillian Flynn

April
Red Rising - Pierce Brown
Golden Son - Pierce Brown

May
Morning Star - Pierce Brown
Echos of Reckoning - Ron Shaw

June

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time - Mark Haddon

I has the sadz!

I finished DCC Book VII, This Inevitable Ruin, and now I has to wait for the next one.

It was great. Solidly entertaining. Donut gets funnier every book, but like the Harry Potter books, the more these books progress, the more darkness is introduced to the plot lines and characters.

Carl is showing some scar material more than he ever has, and it only seems to be building. Donut too.

These books are so much fun.

Waiting for book 8.

Finishing Boy's Life, House of Assassins, and progressing through COMC.

Come back, Carl and Donut!

reading that one right now as well. About halfway through and loving it so far.

The only other one I've read by him is Agincourt, but liking this one better.

Finished Boy's Life because of a recommendation in this thread.

In many ways, it's a very beautiful and nostalgic tribute to life in America in the the 1960s for a middle class boy coming of age in the American south.

There's lots of old memories here that folks over 50 can relate to and remember.

Playing outside till the streetlights come on.
Riding bikes everywhere, miles away from your home, unsupervised, but managing.
Friendships, bullying, and innocence in daily life.
The power of imagination and dreams, as well as the cost of clinging to them.
Doing the right and noble thing for the only reason that they are right and noble.
Confronting the curse of racism weighed against common life struggles and mutual humanity.

It touches on all of it and more.

It was easy to read, easy to dive into, and rewarding, especially when you are old enough to look back at your similar memories, friendships, and life experiences.

I would recommend!

I also.picked up Book 1 of Wayward Pines series that I knew nothing about. I didn't even know there was a show made out of it. I'm 50 pgs in, and I can see how it's a compelling premise. I'll keep you updated.

Malice(The Faithful and the Fallen Book 1) by John Gwynne. Really fantastic opening novel in a fantasy quartet. Author is clearly heavily inspired by Celtic culture and myth, which is super cool. Great plot(hard to put the book down) and character development so far.

Took a break from Red Rising series, read Frankenstein over the weekend which I really enjoyed. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was very well written. Started Slaughter house 5 today based on Texags recommendations. Very strange start and writing style (I just started chapter 2).

Everyone should read Frankenstein. It's very impressive that she wrote that at such a young age. The introduction seems very random, until you get far enough into it to see what she is doing and see how it ties in ultimately to a painful tale of man's ability to use technology, but getting way ahead of himself without the wisdom to govern its use. It's like so much of what we are seeing today.

Vonnegut is so interesting because he's so weird and unpredictable, but not in bad ways. I met him when I was in grad school. He came to read and present to the graduate and undergraduate students. By then his cynicism was well in place, but the guy was fascinating. He died not long after.

You are choosing good books that everyone should read!

Reminds me of the line from *Finding Forrester*: "Writers do readings to get laid."

I always remember his response to that one class, and his insistence that we should create something every day.

this is so funny to me because every author I know hates reading to an audience. I feel like it's shown in movies and TVs all the time but it's far from the norm. Most author events don't involve reading to the public because honestly thats pretty boring (the exception being children's books for ages 0-12).

Twinsies!

Just finished the other day myself. Book two got delayed a bit but will be starting tonight or tomorrow. Sucked me right in so far.

We are on a solid pace so far and I'm currently slowly reading the complete GOTs series (try to read 25-30 pages of that per day) along with reading normal books each week.

I'm halfway through Boys Life. Pace has slowed down due to work obligations and also reading Farseer books. But I also like Boys Life. You described it well. Almost feels like a mix between a Stephen King book and the show Wonder Years. Lots of nostalgia.

Finished Pet Sematary by Stephen King. Man this guy knows how to write a story. SK even had a solid ending to this one, which seems to be a weakness for him. I've read a ton of King books (and still not even scratched the surface of his catalog) and this was one of my favorites.

I think next year I'm going to go all in on trying to read as many SK novels as I can.

Until then, my books that became movies adventure continues…

Appreciate it! I really enjoyed both books for very different reasons. Definitely recommend both books, as you said, every one should read them. Both stories continue to make me think/consider choices made (Frankenstein) and the theories/mindset of the characters/author of Slaughterhouse five. I'm on to No Country for Old men.

Appreciate all the recommendations and look forward to reading/listening to them.

Earlier this week I finished Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, and yesterday I finished the fifth book in the Plainsman series, a Trail to Redemption. I started the sixth book, The Trail to Rebellion immediately after that.

Have you read The Bachman Books? The Long Walk is coming up as a movie.

I think Rage is being censored in some areas because of school shootings.

I haven't read any of the Bachman books. I saw somewhere the other day that Rage was no longer in print "..at the request of the author". I had never heard of it, so I have no idea what it's about.

I saw the trailer for The Long Walk…looks very interesting!
