In 2 parts. July 18th & 25th.
As a big Joel fan, I'm all in.
Interesting this was made in the wake of the announced biopic that Billy refused rights to his music, name/likeness or life story.

Saw him with Stevie Nicks in their double headliner tour last April in Dallas.

Wow what a show. Seriously one of the best concerts I've ever seen.

First time I had seen Billy although I was a fan from back in the late 70s. Oddly somehow my daughter (now 25) turned into a huge Stevie Nicks and Billy Joel fan. Probably her favorites from all the 80s music I made her listen to growing up. She used to beat down her fellow drill team members as one of their officers by making them do their warmup to Billy Joel songs constantly especially Uptown Girl. We went to the concert together and what a great father/daughter experience it was. She flew in from NYC just for the show.

Anyway Billy is just an interesting guy. At the same time very humble and self deprecating but makes a real audience connection with his humanity and ability to relate to the common man.

I'm in for sure.

We were at that show. It was great. I'd seen Stevie with Fleetwood Mac, but never solo. That was my 4th Billy show, and it's always been a great time. Something about that night and seeing them both though was very special.

Ditto on Stevie I had seen her with FM before.

It was very special - two icons to be sure and a big time double bill. Really was two headliners.

And we had to wait a year plus since the original date (March of 2023) got delayed due to COVID with Stevie and her band as I recall. But it was worth the wait. My daughter had moved back to NY in the interim but she was not missing that show and flew in for the weekend.

Saw him during his Nylon Curtain tour in Houston. Great showman and loved the use of war veterans as chorus for Goodnight Saigon. Also had the opportunity to see him and Elton John together. He is one of my favorite all time artists. I know it's not "cool" now but I don't give a crap. Awesome talent. Unbelievable writer.

I saw him November '79 my senior year in highschool at the Houston Summit. After 52nd Street, but before Glass Houses. First "big star" concert I had been to. I don't know if I have ever enjoyed a concert as much since then. Thanks for posting. I'll be watching for that on HBO.

Absolutely can't wait for this.

Hoping he makes it back out on the road eventually, but I'll take my three shows (Fenway Park 2019, Charlotte 2022, Madison Square Garden 2023) if that's all I get.

We went to San Antonio from BCS to see him & Sting on their last round. Great show by both artist. We had not seen Billy since the early 2000s so it was great to get one last party in before he called it quits.

Always loved Billy Joel. Doesn't seem to get the respect he deserves today.

"Leningrad," "Goodnight Saigon," "Allentown" .... all masterclasses in writing a popular song around a contemporary political topic without being preachy. He's actually better than Springsteen in that regard, IMO.

Very sad that I never got to see him live. If he recovers and starts touring again, I will be there for sure even if I need to travel.

Another 2 favorite songs of him that are not as popular: "Vienna" & "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant." But so many good songs and such an eventful life. Is going to be a great documentary. Looking forward to it!

His 1979 concert in Austin may be my favorite concert I've attended.

You've heard of Ken Marino right? He was great on MTV's The State and has had a nice career. He was also in Party Down and Veronica Mars.

Dude has a great voice.

The drummer David Wain was also in The State and starred with Ken Marino in Wet Hot American Summer (replica sign in the background of the videos)

I have started enjoying Billy Joel songs more as I get older and branch out to find music outside of the most played hits

Never been in my top tier, but I wore out the Storm Front cassette when I was a kid (mainly because I loved We Didn't Start the Fire, and Downeaster Alexa lyrics are right up there with Jaws quotes when we go fishing down on the coast every year and I maybe luck into catching one one fish and otherwise have no clue what I'm doing).

Took the extended family when he played at Globe Life Park in 2019 and I think one of the most incomparable things in music is 45,000 people singing the chorus to Piano Man in unison outside on a beautiful evening. Give me that over Sweet Caroline any day (and I'm a big Neil Diamond fan).

Saw him in Houston 15 years ago. Have been listening since Storm Front (first encounter via Columbia CD club, also known as Columbia Record Club) when I was 10. Have all the CDs, including deluxe versions (ie The Stranger), as well as all official live releases and his classical music release.

I knew he had mental health issues like many artists but didn't know he nearly died from suicide and was in a psych ward for a few weeks. Glad he made it.

Definitely heard of Ken Marino and recognized him right away. I just didn't realize he had a band of old guys doing killer covers of great songs!

A big Billy Joel fan that saw him live at Globe Life in 2019. I didn't realize the effect that his first wife had on his music nor did I realize she was his manager

The first part is almost as much about wife Elizabeth Weber as it is about Billy Joel. I had no idea she drove his early successes as much as she did.

I'm also surprised it's just in two parts given both are about 2.5 hours each. It goes into a lot of depth, but doesn't really drag at least for me.

Looking forward to the Christie Brinkley years, and two marriages after that…

I enjoyed the first part and agreed it didn't drag, but I was pretty happy it made it through the Glass Houses era since after that I lose interest musically in his catalogue for the most part.

Great documentary. Just the Way You are was our wedding song 37 years ago. So I guess he was right about it being a wedding song. What a meteoric ride from small bars to arenas...all in just a few years. Such a genius. Love the honesty of this documentary.

Good Part One. I'm not sure why they're opting for two separate 2.5 hour parts though. Could have easily made this a 5 episode event and it would have even more watchable in that format imo

Watched last night. I'm a big Billy Joel fan but never knew his first wife was married to his best friend at the time. A George Harrison/Eric Clapton type deal. I never really have heard Billy talk about the first wife's son and I dont know if he even mentioned him in the show so that was interesting. The first wife had a much larger role in his career than I had thought and the discussion of their breakup in the show was sad. But that's life. I'm assuming that the financial issues will be covered in part 2 but Billy was such a public figure by that time, much will be rehashing for me.

But as a note. I became a fan after The Stranger. My freshman year English professor at A&M in 78 was a big fan and our final was to write a paper about the meaning of either Scenes From an Italian Restaurant or the song The Stranger. I chose Scenes and aced the final.

Very good first part I.

During the beginning portion, I was asking myself how he got to be such a great piano player and they finally got to that in the second half.

Billy is/was many things but he was not disloyal. He stuck with his guys from LI to be his band and what a brilliant move it was.

Looking forward to part II on Friday.

Was in NYC last weekend - originally planned the trip to see Billy at Yankee Stadium.

Hopefully he'll be well enough to perform again soon.

This is an interesting confession, but he's wrong. (Slate review)

I've been a fan since my 9 year old self secured Storm Front on cassette, and the bottom line is, like Paul McCarthy, he's brought a lot of joy to tens of millions. Despite my annoyances with him, as with Springsteen, I just like the songs.

He's also a very interesting human character, with things in common - confidence wise - with Prince.

Both of them, in high school, told teachers they weren't going to do work because they would make it as a musician. And then they did.

Speaking of McCartney I liked his brief segment and how if he could have ever written a song he wish he had written "She's Always a Woman" which makes sense as I could totally see Paul writing that song as it shares his sensibilities and has a great melody.

Looking forward to Friday.
