For general audiences I'll be shocked if the movie lives up to this level of hype. There's just no way.

That said, it's still incredibly cool to see praise like this, as it only comes along once every few years, it seems.

Regardless, I have my tickets for next Friday in IMAX and I cannot wait.

That being said, if it shows actual conservatism in a kind of positive light it would not be getting this treatment from critics. I'll be interested to see wtf this is about.

I mean... immigrants *are* being rounded up now in unprecedented ways, and there *are* very vocal members of our current government actively endorsing Christian Nationalism. So making a movie about what could happen if those things were left unchecked/taken to the extreme seems perfectly fine/plausible to me. No different than a movie warning about the dangers of AI by depicting a future in which AI has taken over. That doesn't mean that AI is inherently bad, in the same way that neither stricter immigration enforcement nor Christianity are inherently bad. But simply saying, "Hey, let's maybe not let these things get out of control" via a movie in which those things have gotten out of control, while also seemingly leaning slightly conservative in certain other ways, shouldn't be "divisive." But these are the times we live in, and I can already feel the exhaustion from the months of mindless debate to come, all the way until the Oscars in March.

The point I'll make with this post has nothing to do with whether the movie is actually divisive and over-the-top in its critique of the current political climate.

I simply think that the extremely, and they are extremely, favorable gushing reviews likely are to some degree owing only to the movie's theme (which does sound like a critique of the Trump goverrnment). The movie likely is good...PTA does make good movies after all. I'm just saying in the end it likely won't actually be the once in a generation masterpiece that these reviews are claiming.

Heck, the trailers still do nothing for me.

Please use basic reading comprehension skills and read my post again. I DID NOT say that what is happening currently is "out of control." I clearly said that, if left unchecked, given the fervor of certain politicians/individuals in that regard, there's a world in which it could eventually get out of control. And it sounds like this movie is simply a warning against that extremism. That's it and that's all.

I agree with you 100% on this. Which is kind of what I was alluding to earlier when I said there's no way this lives up to the hype.

What seems crazy to me is that I'm 49, which means I grew up watching plenty of futuristic and sci-fi shows and movies that were set in facist states. Sure there was always a little bit of "oooh man, what if this really took place", but for most often or not it was just another plot device. Only now in the 2020's does a simple movie plot become so divisive and consequential to both parties.

I think the difference is oftentimes that the writing is so condescending. Post apocalyptic/sci fi books and movies have almost always had undertones with social and/or political commentary, but it left room for the reader to interpret without getting in the way of imagery and plot.

Take the Handmaid's Tale. The first season was excellent. season 5 and 6, when it took place more in Canada and (spoiler alert) they started hitting you over the head with MAGA type references and immigration issues and finally actually idiotically using the phrase "nazi" to describe one of the bad guys....its no fun for anyone because it feels like attending a lecture.

most people will agree that the worst parts of Ayn Rand novels are when she goes on her long political rants and they would stand just fine without them.

most of the modern fiction with social agendas today has all the subtly of a brick to the face.

Just another reason why I'm so curious to see this. Will it be blatant/condescending or more generalized/nuanced? Given the fact that it's PTA, I'm guessing/hoping for the latter, but who knows.

If you can't see the problem with critics gushing about a movie that seems to depict violent revolutionaries against far-fetched caricatures of the right in the aftermath of the murder of Charlie Kirk and the widespread celebrations of it on the left, there really may be no hope for self-awareness.

Demonization and boogeymen are a big part of what got us to this point. Doubling down on it is definitely not "exactly what this country needs" as several of the reviewers state.

That's very much exactly what this country doesn't need, more cultural push to view the other side in such dehumanizing fashion as to preclude dialogue and justify horrific acts of violence.

Some of these critics' reactions and descriptions are just unfathomably tone deaf given the timing, and to not even recognize that is kinda nuts.

Depiction is not endorsement.

To that end, you have no idea what is endorsed in this movie vs what is simply depicted in this movie.

It's like watching only the trailer for The Wolf of Wall Street, seeing all the great reviews, and then getting mad that Scorsese is celebrating drugs, alcohol, corruption, and fraud. When, in reality, the movie itself is doing the exact opposite. Similarly, here, you haven't yet seen the movie for yourself to be able to engage in this kind of finger waving yet. Instead, you have a movie you're imagining in your head, treating it as fact, and then getting mad about it all on your own.

If you actually see the movie for yourself and still have these feelings, come back and ***** and moan all you want. Until then, spare us the lecture.

If the best answer you have is that only most or some of the reviews completely ignored the very fresh murder of a pretty moderate voice on the right, whose trademark was engaging in civil dialogue with the other side, by someone who was brainwashed into believing he was a hateful oppressor deserving of murder by the media he consumed, that tepid defense kinda speaks for itself.

It's just crazy to ignore that when reviewing this movie or talking about the reviews. It's the elephant in the room and to not even acknowledge it says a ton.
