I finally watched this last night and enjoyed it. I think I wasn't as upset as others were about the ending because I knew it didn't have one going into it.

I heard it mentioned in the background of the first and last POV's that they launched a 2nd round of GBI's about 5 minutes before impact. I guess I'm an optimist so in my version of the ending the missile was taken out shortly after the screen went black.

Interesting. I wondered why they didn't do that. I guess they did.

I could watch it again to catch that but.... nah not gonna do that!!!!

Weird that if they did no one seemed to be aware and tracking them like the first GBI's.

GBIs only work in the mid course phase not the terminal phase. Pretty sure MDA working on a boost phase interceptor. Of course all bets are off with emerging HGV tech.

Wife and I watched it a few nights ago. 10mins into the 2nd act I tuned out realing where this would go.

On the plus side, noting the interceptors failed and there only 50 remaining was a scary part. They couldn't afford to send more up for fear of more inbounds is very dark math.

The fact they couldn't determine who launched it was also stomach churning. This is by far the most terrifying g scenario. A rogue nation on its heels for whatever reason puts a mobile launcher on a crappy container freighter, sends it out into international waters and launches. Not 1, maybe multiple, maybe multiple from multiple freighters.

A movie is under development on the novel "1 Second After". That I'm looking forward to as the author is also a producer.

This movie was a B-, contemt A+, execution solid D, but the thought exercise is terrifying. I just didnt need to watch the same 30mins 3x.

That part was silly and bad math. If you have a success rate around 30% you don't send 2 to stop 1 rogue missile.

Because if the possible response to one rogue missile is to send a lot of yours at whoever, then their retaliation is for them to send 1000 back at you - at which point having 50 or 40 or 30 makes no difference at all.

You put everything into stopping the one missile even if you expend 10 or 20 of them. They are replaceable longterm. But there is no do over on your response. You cannot let yourself fail just in case something worse happens because if you fail something worse is guaranteed to happen.

I'm usually very open and willing to interact with films that take huge swings, but this was bull***** The first two acts of this were so well directed, and anxiety-inducing that I reasoned that it can't possibly end as badly as people were saying, but I was totally wrong. I'm a guy who is usually in the bag for stuff like this, and even I can't justify it. It's like the film version of the South Carolina game yesterday, only in reverse-absolute brilliance, followed by absolute failure and disaster. I love Bigelow as a director, but this is borderline insulting.

Slightly off topic, but on the discussion of GBI's, I looked it up and we apparently only have 44 GBI's, with 20 more planned for 2028. The 44 amount seems like a shockingly low number for the US government with basically unlimited funds?? Are they just super expensive to make or something.
