That was filmed at Travis HS in Austin. I did a summer semester there in '86. Still brings back memories every time I see it.

I believe the opening scenes were filmed at Bedichek Middle School and the "middle school" in the film was actually an elementary school. Not sure that Travis made it into the production, but I could be wrong. Although Bedichek and Travis have a VERY similar feel.

A lot of my peers at Austin High were also cast/extras in the movie...including the girl that Mitch ended up with. Football field scenes at the end were filmed at Burger Center a few minutes from where I lived back then.

I mentioned earlier I always wanted to see the opening scene set to LZs "Rock and Roll" which was Linklaters initial vision for it.

Perhaps I'll go create that myself - cuz I tried it and played the song on my own while watching the scene but I need to line it up so it fades out as the bell rings like the movie does - it will fit nicely to right about the point in R&R when it transitions out of the guitar solo around 2:13

I had no idea. I've seen Dazed and Confused an unhealthy number of times and watched all of Yellowstone, except for this last season. This blows my mind.

He also gives one of the most authentic drunk performances when he gets up and realizes "oh sh*t, I'm f'd up" and sits back down. Classic.

I laugh at this scene every time.

Benny played a pretty convincing neo-nazi/skinhead a few yrs later in "Higher Learning"

Also I don't know if she's in many other movies, but I have always thought this girl was the best of the bunch in Dazed...

Oh man...I forgot about the Higher Learning role for Benny. He had the best acting in the entire movie.

That was also a great "solidly 90s" soundtrack

For those that like to read and love this movie, I can't recommend enough the oral history book that came out a few years ago. Tons of behind the scenes, interviews, drama, love, and how all this got thrown together by an unknown filmmaker.

I only realized this year (I saw a reaction video to this movie which was fun) that Cynthia the redhead was Giovanni Ribisi's sister Marissa.

Also found this great cast photo that was supposed to be yearbook photos.

The guy Shawn Andrews who played Pickford was supposedly a giant ass on set. He insisted on smoking for this shot even though it was supposed to be for a yearbook which would never be allowed. He was married to Milla Jovovich at the time and thought he was hot **** and one upped the rest of the cast all the time. He thought he was going to be the big star out of this movie. And he even got into an on set fight with Jason London (Pink). The marriage lasted less than a year.

Interesting, she was also married to Beck from 2004-2021.

Back then, RRISD had a sophisticated phone system for substituting where you could put in which subjects you were willing to teach.

Believe me, English was not on my list.

Yup I heard the same stuff about him and Linklater quickly pivoted away from his storylines. It certainly helped when they realized they had lightning in a bottle with McConaughey and started coming up with new scenes to feature him.

Affleck's pic is chef's kiss. Also you couldn't ask for a more typical yearbook pic than Sasha Jenson's.

Agreed for the girls Shavonne Wright (bottom right) and Kaye Faulker (top right) are perfection. Although Jodi Kramer (Mitch's sister second row next to Parker Posey) is also great. I think. the ones I know better just look too much like the actresses I know but are still great in this sort of time capsule.

Funny but I suppose it is accurate that Mitch is left out since he would just be a freshman and his buddies are not there either. Nor Wooderson of course.

Probably a good thing Mitch isn't in it, he'd be covering his face with his hand anyway.

In 1992, he was 20 and Milla Jovovich was 16, which is why her mother had the marriage annulled after two months.

Honestly surprised he thought such a minor role would launch him.

The role wasn't supposed to be minor. It got downgraded significantly due to him being a huge jerk to everyone. That's the legend at least.

This is a good time to advocate for Linklater's film Boyhood.

It is as amazing as Dazed and Confused but for different reasons. Both capture Texas like very few films can though.

Every time "Sweet Emotion" plays I just imagine a GTO Judge slowly driving through a parking lot.

This movie came out my sophomore year (three year HS), so just made the junior high to high school switch. I do not think I saw it in theaters since it was R-rated, probably rented the VHS first then later bought it and the two soundtrack CDs

He has two incredible, under-appreciated films on Netflix that came out last year. Blue Moon staring Ethan Hawke and Nouvelle Vague.
I loved both. Nouvelle Vague is all in french and is about the making a french new wave film, Breathless. If you haven't seen that movie or researched it, this Linklater film might not land.
But Blue Moon- Ethan Hawke is incredible. He was nominated for an Oscar and I thought he should have won over Michael B Jordan in Sinners. This is also great "hang" movie. Takes place in a NYC bar following the hit play Oklahoma's opening night and the relationship of a songwriter and composer.

I FINALLY DID IT!!!!!

Here is the Dazed and Confused movie opening scene set to a couple of Led Zeppelin tracks.

The first I prefer and is set to the title song "Dazed and Confused" I think it has a much better vibe for the movie. If you ask me it works pretty perfectly with D&C as the songs kicks in to gear right as the parking lot crawl of the Pontiac GTO shows up. And it hits a crescendo and then fades out right as the hallway scene and school bell rings (I had to add my own).

The second is set to "Rock and Roll" as envisioned by Linklater
originally for the movie but he could not get the rights from LZ of course (he later successfully got the rights for Immigrant Song to use in School of Rock). Of course he may have edited it different where it kicks in etc... but it hits a good point the way it is when it fades to the school bell. Although I think it's almost too much of the song before the Pontiac shows up.

Blasphemy - maybe? Sure the opening with Sweet Emotion is great I don't deny it. But I always wanted to see how it felt with the LZ track instead. So I made these myself.

Youtube says the copyright infringement here is ok as long as I don't start making money from this which is not the case so.... hopefully it does not get taken down.

But I must admit I kinda love these. I'm just a huge LZ fan and much more so than Aerosmith. But just a little what if....

The Dazed and Confused version:

The Rock and Roll version:
