How much is the most that you guys would pay to enter into a skeet shooting contest with a cash prize? The wheels are turning in my green little mind...

This is just an idea that I came up with as I was strolling along the gun case in wal-mart last night.

After working 65-75 hours a week all summer, I have some cash to blow.

What's a good first gun to buy? I have quite a bit of experience with guns just never owned one. I'm thinking shotgun or a medium sized rifle.

This would be as good a place as any to find 'advice' on the subject.

Best entry level, affordable shotgun is a Remington 870 Express. 12ga. or 20ga.

The price usually fluctuates from $180 - $220.

http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/shotguns/model_870/model_870_express.asp

This was my first shotgun, but it is also nice because its pretty stout. Later, it can be used as a "beater" gun. For just $200, it doesn't hurt as much if it gets scratched.

Yep, the 870 is a good all around firearm. Inexpensive, so slight scratches from use don't make you sick. Very reliable, and one of the easiest to break down for cleaning.

If you go with a rifle, I'd suggest Marlin...don't know what you're calling medium, but they make a really nice .22mag. If you can account for windage & drop, it will hit a can at 200 yds. If larger bores are more your style it all depends on what the primary use is going to be. IF you want something to play around with, do some research and find something that has inexpensive ammo, like a 9mm...they are worthless IMO, unless you're just wanting to make noise and tear things up.

so that's a thumbs up or a thumbs down on the idea? and how much would you be willing to pay to participate...shells included in price
Armadillo Jackal
How long do you want to ignore this user?
What brand of shells? How many? How many clays?
TexasRebel
How long do you want to ignore this user?
don't include shells in the price...make it optional.

There are some people that are picky about the shells the run through their shotguns, and most of the time you get two people that have a preference, they don't match up. One will run nothing but Sureshot from Remington, the other won't use anything except Super Speed from Winchester.

My advice, if this thing goes through, find some place to buy bulk 12 & 20 shells that are 7-1/2 shot (good clay loads). Maybe hunt down and talk to Brazos Lackey about where the Texas A&M Trap & Skeet team buys their ammo. Then in the advertising mention that ammo is available on site, but you can also bring your own.
Armadillo Jackal
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Or, gasp, they could drive to Academy and buy their own.

Figure out how many clays per person. If you're going to rent a whole lane out for the event, most places will taly how many were shot, and you pay afterwards based on that. Remember, every round in the tourney is 25 clays per person plus a couple for 'no birds.'

Dont shoot skeet with a rifle....one its dangerous, two you need to be a master shot to hit one.

If yall want help let me know, i have guns to loan out at the event, and would be willing to help wiht it.

Generaly skeet shoots dont offer shells on sight, and most folks arent going to expect them. It might be good to keep some on call if were going to bring extra shotguns to loan but....

Ive seen trap competitions with entries as high as 100$, but this isnt that level of competition. It all depends on how nice the trap were at is going to be as to how many folks we can attract outside bonfire.

AND I have about 6-8 shotguns to lends as well...I even have this super neat 16 guage. Anyway...enough about how amazing I am...

I grew up in a redneck town. Youlld be suprised the number of idiots ive seen actualy try to shoot skeet, AT COMPETITION with a 22. It's not that far fetched, from my own experiences with other people, to see someone sugest that.

It's really not that amazing of a feat...

It makes good practice for how fast you can steadily aim a rifle. Normally, most people only shoot at "floaters" with a rifle...you know, those clays that go straight away from you that you don't have to lead.

It would be quite impressive though if somebody could score in the 20's on a competition setup with a .22 or a .17.

for a first time event i'd be willing to shell out 40-50 bucks. That doesn't leave much room for that large of a prize but the range you use should give you a pretty reasonable rate due to the amount of people you can get signed up. I'd be willing to fork some more over after this first one if we make it an annual thing. My advice would be to keep the price as low as possible even if it keeps the prize small because it keeps the sharpshooters out and lets everybody get together and have a good time.

P.S. I would highly suggest not getting a mossberg shotgun. I have one and, yes it works, but the stock it not designed correctly so the gun sits on your shoulder weird which makes it hard to aim properly. Shell out the extra 50-75 bucks and get the remington you'll be happier with it.

so a $40 entry fee for two/three rounds, depending on turnout, with cash prizes and a gun as first prize? with raffles?

and say we get JCody's to cater, and you can purchase lunch if you so desire?

Opinions?
Ag_of_08
How long do you want to ignore this user?
For those kinds of prizes, right on. You advertise enough and youll probably get people outside of bonfire to come in and shoot LOL.
