Maybe it's just me, but I was always taught that ALL AGGIES, every single one of us, are a family--albeit the Aggie family, so in effect, when one of us is affected, WE ALL ARE AFFECTED! If one of my Aggie brothers or sisters are in need, I believe it is my duty as an Aggie to help them, regardless if I know them on a personal level or not. "...We are the Aggies, the Aggies are we. TRUE TO EACH OTHER AS AGGIES CAN BE..."

Now, I'm not in full support of a boycott, but I think people should be educated about what happened. If we Aggies idly sat by and allowed others to joke over those 12 lives, they will never know that we are deeply hurt and offended by those kind of remarks. While we're at it, why don't we let people joke about the Aggies who earned the Medal of Honor while sacrificing their life for the United States, Texas, their families and friends, and Texas A&M--they knew the danger of serving their country. That would just be ludacris.

I also think that if I were in that situation, I would not have had the patience that he had. I probably would have gotten thrown off the plane and arrested for saying something "insensitive", but people need to know why we are so sensitive about this tragedy, and they will not be educated by silence. I applaud all those who wrote a letter, and although I sincerely hope this situation did not cost her a job, I do hope she learned something about Aggies--we are a family and will stick together when the going gets rough.

Finally, I don't even understand why people joke about it. We had successfully built Bonfire since 1909, and all of the sudden, when one finally (I feel that it was inevitable--I really compare it to the space shuttle program, in that it's a dangerous assignment, but all those involved, especially the astronauts, know the dangers and are still willing to take the risks because the benefits far outway those risks), and tragically, came down people feel they can joke about it. It makes no sense to me.

jmtamu, your comments on being "thin skinned" about the subject of this thread, then you go off on 3rd Generation. Neurotic, your bio says your interest is "apathy", probably explains your attitude concerning this thread. I for one agree with the posters that were upset by the comments made by "Victoria". I say "fire away". 3rd Gen., Bonfire is high on my list also.

Fightin, I would agree with most of what you said, it's VERY important to be supportive of one another, and when the situation calls for it, sometimes you gotta put yourself out on a limb to do so. But I think a great deal of perspective is lost over the fact that this is a lowly flight attendant we're talking about. Sure it's bothersome when anybody makes light of anything so serious, especially about anything that hits so close to home. But did anybody really suffer any damages over it? Do you get all whipped up when people talk about how awful Bush is or how stupid this country is? What about when people take jabs at your religion or any other number of things?

It's important to defend those you care about and the things that matter to you, but the extent of your reaction must in some way match the extent of the wrong that was committed. Yes, somebody did think it was fair game to make fun of what happened in 1999, horrible and inexcusable. It was an ignorant flight attendant who I sincerely doubt meant any real harm in doing so. So why don't we focus our energies towards a more noble cause? Never forget those who died, hold them in the honor of your heart and forever in your mind, and when the time is necessary, do your best in situations necessary to educate those who have a misunderstanding about something we Aggies hold so dear. But at the end of the day, an ignorant young lady said something in the heat of the moment that had she known better she would never have said. It was a mistake.

Keep things in perspective, and never forget the Twelve or anybody that matters dearly to us.

Somebody, somehow is going to be offended by what I just said simply because it was me that said it. That's classic TexAgs Bonfire Forum right there for ya.

Absolutely Square. I just feel that she needs to be more educated before she talks about such an event. Unfortunately, tragedies happen all the time, but they should never be taken lightly, especially by the uninformed. Ultimately, SHE is the one who must inform herself of the things she jokes about, but at least she knows now how we feel about it--and for that, I'm glad. True, we will probably never convince every person to respect our wishes, but I think it's a noble thing to stand up for.

Hell I wasn't even there when it happened (I was in jr. high!)--and I will probably NEVER see an official Bonfire because of the '99 collapse.

AB, I'm sorry you feel that way. I can't do any more than give you the things I've said, and if you think that my sentiments regarding 12 young Aggies is in any way affected by my feelings regarding the current student bonfire project, then you are sorely sorely mistaken. I have very little respect of concern for statements like your's.

That was a pretty ****ty thing to say, and few people around here are able to even begin to offend me, but remarks like that certainly do.

I boycott AA because they have lost my luggage on 3 different occasions. I haven't noticed them going bankrupt because of this, but it gives me satisfaction.....and some peace of mind that my luggage might actually arrive on the same plane as me.

That seems like a pretty reasonable cause to boycott a company. Loss or damage of goods.

My dad works for American Airlines and has a pretty prestigous position. All I hear from him usually is how worthless flight attendents are. Take that for what its worth...

My own airline would investigate and discipline an employee who said something like this in the line of duty.

But those of you urging restraint on the airplane are correct.

My I suggest that if you have this kind of run-in in the future, find out of the offending employee is the lead flight attendant. If she's not, ask to speak to the lead. If she is, try to her her name, record the flight number, and write a letter once you get home.

It also helps if you haven't been drinking on the flight.

I wish people wouldn't make this kind of comparison. Automobiles, airplanes, and even space shuttles can be considered necessary conveyances, or part of somebody's line of work. They are necessary risks.

There was no necessity for building a Bonfire.

A better comparison would be Bonfire building with high school football. Every year a half dozen young football players die in practice or games, and football certainly can't be considered an indispensable part of a young person's education. All of the lessons of sportsmanship and competitiveness could be learned in less dangerous sports. Yet, we're not about to cancel high school football, and I believe the same argument can be made more successfully for optional activities such as Bonfire.

A note to the original poster -

I am an Aggie and an engineer for AA. The idea that one flight attendant's very poor comments represents the views of American Airlines is ludicrous. There are 4 Aggie engineers in my department alone.

I am embarrassed by the incident and totally agree with your demand for an apology, but please take it easy on bashing American Airlines for one employee's misguided remarks. We have somewhere around 80,000 employees at AA, and some of them are your "family" as well.

ChiefRussell: Tell your son we as Aggies all over the world are sorry he would have to endure this. I want to thank him for being a representative for our Fighting Texas Aggies!

It certainly sounds as if your son conducted himself with honor and as a man of character and as a person who is respectful of others. How so Aggie Like!

I have forwarded your letter to all of my Aggie comrades in my mail boxes. I also wrote Mr. Arpey, myself.

I agree with an earlier post who said we are all Family at Aggieland. Aggies all over the world are one huge family. If you slap my brother, you've got to fight me, also.

DallasAg08,

Your age is showing.

My sister is a flight attendant for AA and does one hell of a job (for 21 years).
They are not worthless. They are not there to serve you your coolaid. They are there for your safety.
If your plane ever needs to be evacuated, get out of their way, as they know what to do.

Your dad is a worthless airline employee if he feels this way and I firmly mean this.

This girl, if proven guilty, should lose her job. She is 100% wrong and should pay the price.

However, everyone please relax.

AA is a great airline and will handle this.

I would never fly anyone else and I am a platinum rewards member at AA.

Occasionally, on the West Coast, I am forced to fly SW or Amer West (US Air) and always miss being on AA.

Gig 'em!

....and another thing Dallas "too stupid to be an" Ag 08..

Define prestiguous...

If he is high up, he would never say this.

"prestigious" positions would "respect" every aspect of his company. I know I do with mine.

Your dad should watch his mouth.....because he is teaching little Jr. to disrespect flight attendants...which obviously is working.

Actually, serving refreshments is part of their job...

You would think someone as old as you who has a sibling that has been working as a flight attendant for 21 years would know that...

Flight Attendants have a stigma attached to them, regardless of what you think...Most are perceived as being less intelligent and are seen as doing a job that is not that difficult...

Be that as it may Flight attendants do an important job...They make sure everyone gets the drinks they want!

By the way, does it make you feel cool to call somebody "little boy"? Or is that just some weird fetish you have...Kind of creepy

Lestat,

Why are you siding with this guy?

He openly made an unnecessary remark.

Be thankful you get a drink on the plane.
Their primary job is our safety.

I honestly don't understand why you would side with him.

Yeah, just be thankful the most important job you'll ever see them do is get you a drink Lestat, in a time of need though, I'm sure they'd be willing and able to bail you out.

Who said I was siding with him?

You certainly seem to have alot of hostility...

Flight attendants serve a variety of functions...While they can show me how to fasten my seatbelt I mostly rely on them to bring me refreshments on a flight...

If something goes wrong on a plane I have complete faith that I will be able to open that exit door just as easily as a flight attendant could, also I think I can figure out how to follow the lights to the exit, grab my own life preserver and attach my own oxygen mask...

I appreciate the fact that you feel you are defending your sisters honor, however the perception of a job is usually what people rely on...

I'm not sure why you haven't been able to figure that out...

btw, with the prices airlines are charging for tickets now a days, having someone serve you a drink is the least an Airline can do for its customers...

I know a little about airtravel and airlines, just because your sister is a flight attendant doesnt make you some kind of end all be all expert on aircraft operation
