So if a cop isn't pulling you over or directing traffic, what exactly is his purpose?
A cop pulls you over because you are breaking a law that exists because it is unsafe to do what you did. Take speeding. Speed limits are there, in thoery, because it is unsafe to drive above the MPH listed.
He/she is directing traffic because some situation has occurred (traffic lights out for instance) that necessitates that to keep people safe.
Both of things you mention directly involve his JOB: keeping the public safe.
Care to explain how serving me a coke is keeping me safe (to keep with your parallel).
Honestly, I find the added "convenience" of the inflight meal/drink an unnecessary expense. It also adds to the "turn around" time of planes. I would imagine you could probably save enough time not putting food on the plane to add another flight in the day.
If I could get a cheaper flight, I would forgo that service if possible.
