So if a cop isn't pulling you over or directing traffic, what exactly is his purpose?

A cop pulls you over because you are breaking a law that exists because it is unsafe to do what you did. Take speeding. Speed limits are there, in thoery, because it is unsafe to drive above the MPH listed.

He/she is directing traffic because some situation has occurred (traffic lights out for instance) that necessitates that to keep people safe.

Both of things you mention directly involve his JOB: keeping the public safe.

Care to explain how serving me a coke is keeping me safe (to keep with your parallel).

Honestly, I find the added "convenience" of the inflight meal/drink an unnecessary expense. It also adds to the "turn around" time of planes. I would imagine you could probably save enough time not putting food on the plane to add another flight in the day.

If I could get a cheaper flight, I would forgo that service if possible.

You must have been shot down by a flight attendant or something along those lines, you really seem to harbor a special sort of disdain for these gentle women.

Just my 2 cents, written before I saw the post containing the AA CEO apology.

– I am reasonably sure that American Airlines, as do most airlines, trains and expects their employees to treat all customers with courtesy and respect. The employees wear the uniform and represent the organization. I have no doubt that this flight attendant’s actions would probably not be endorsed by the company.

–Having said that, I’m reasonably certain that the most that can be expected might be a letter of apology from American. If any action is taken with respect to the employee, current employment laws probably prohibit the company from disclosing that confidential action.

– Common courtesy and respect, not to mention what used to be known as customer service, are rapidly disappearing in today’s coarsening world. Whether the loss of good manners and good service known to previous generations is a cause or a symptom is immaterial. People seem to have forgotten how to be professional toward customers. That does not mean, though, that one should just become the proverbial doormat and accept disrespect as a matter of course. While attempts to re-establish standards and expectations of courtesy may well fail, doing nothing ensures those standards will continue to erode.

– I am absolutely certain that American Airlines will never miss the business of one customer, or even one customer plus all his friends and family. However, in this country, we still have the right to choose which businesses we patronize. There is absolutely nothing wrong with deciding not to patronize a business where we have been treated shabbily, and no restitution is offered or made. Neither is there anything wrong with using resources at hand to spread the word about that shabby treatment.

AB, I'm sorry you feel that way. I can't do any more than give you the things I've said, and if you think that my sentiments regarding 12 young Aggies is in any way affected by my feelings regarding the current student bonfire project, then you are sorely sorely mistaken. I have very little respect of concern for statements like your's.

That was a pretty ****ty thing to say, and few people around here are able to even begin to offend me, but remarks like that certainly do.

Just calling it how I see it.

Bonfire collapse was a very real tragedy, but seriously, you are beyond pathetic if you are going to start a boycott campaign over the action of one person.

One Person can be an example of a society or of a company. If there is no response then that is more of an example of the Company's Poor Attitude towards a group of people. Face this reality. Aggies are probably some of the thickest skinned people you can meet. We take more garbage in the form of insults and intollerant jokes and down right abuse than most. But had this person told a racial joke it would have been HEADLINE NEWS. It takes 30 seconds to write a "We sincerely appologize for the remark as we do not abide that type of comment" and it could ahve EASILY been turned into a major positive for AA had they done something a bit more like a formal published appology with a couple dollars sent to the 12th Man Foundation or something similar. They could have made this a Pro-Aggie Pro-AA hand holding group hug event and gotten tend of thousands of dollares worth fo FREE (or very cheap) advertising to a group that uses their planes a BUNCH... Instead. Brushoff and Cold SHoulder.

When you tell a person to just "sit down adn shutup and take it" then you are no worse than someone that allows a bullie to bullie or a racist to be a racist.

Our society is better for people standing up for their rights. (Gosh I sound like a NAACP Add for Black History Month).

The point remains. Beat The Hell outta AA....

WHOOP!

Reading more I see that AA has not turned it into a positive. They turned it Nuetral. Appology sent done, next. Too bad too. They really coudl ahve done more and made it mean more. But at least they are not giving it the brushoff.

I laughed at reading that. My experience is that Aggies (especially the ones on Texags) are thin-skinned cry babies.

Wow, I missed this one...haven't been on the forum in a while.

This has nothing to do with being 'thin-skinned'; it has everything to do with respect and professional courtesy. There are some things that you just don’t bring up around particular groups of people. Period. It has nothing to do with everyone in said particular group having an irreparable emotional scar that will be torn upon again upon the mentioning of a particular event, though it may certainly be the case for those Ags that worked on Bonfire in ’99, but it has more to do with having respect for what was a dark time for a particular group. This doesn’t apply just to Aggies in reference to Bonfire collapse: No decent person walks down the streets of Berlin giving everyone a Hitler salute; No decent person cracks Holocaust jokes outside of a synagogue; No decent person walks outside the Main Building at t.u. and talks about pulling a Charles Whitman on everyone; AND NO DECENT PERSON USES BONFIRE COLLAPSE AS THE PUCHLINE OF AN AGGIE JOKE!

I won’t even touch on the professional courtesy part…this is self-explanatory. Most people in the service industry would have their arses fired for pulling something like this.

Nothing to do with thin-skin. I have read the Bonfire Commission’s report. I know what happened. I know what went wrong. Do I have a problem talking about it – No. I DO have a problem, though, when people make a mockery of it. End of story.

And no, I do not believe the words of this one ignorant, disrespectful jackass reflect the views of American Airlines.

Will I think twice about booking a flight with them in the future - certainly, but that is just the nature of human bias. I hold no personal grudge over the company as a whole.

WTF??????????????????

Thickest skinned??? Ya gotta be kidding me.

Have you ever noticed just how many companies/sportswriters/magazines/recruiting websites/newspapers/ that you guys are boycotting just because you feel they "disrespected the aggies"?

Why do you think that is? Is it because they enjoy the rise it gets out of most of you?
