Growing the manufacturing base! I'm just glad we don't pay these tariffs. Canada, China and the rest of the world are paying off our national debt.

Those were only rates after a large amount of product came in without those rates. Also Trump negotiated the deal for those rates during his first term.

Strangely, those exorbitant tariffs never caused any inflation in Canada. Nor did a single economist warn that they would.

in fact, nobody seemed to have any concern that they would be the cause of any future inflation, either.

Wierd, huh?

Based on what I read, those are over quota tariffs. We have over quota tariffs also on them.

They also control production and prices on these items domestically. Don't think that is something we want to see here.

Please look at this chart comparing per capita gdp in the US to PC GDP in Canada and then tell me why we should copy a single thing those idiots do. Canada's per capita GDPs was actually slightly higher than ours just 14 years ago, and now ours is ~50% (!!!) higher than theirs.

Canada is run by idiots and Autarky is a loser strategy that makes everybody poorer. They are not doing something that we should emulate.

Why is he upset about the rates affecting our dairy farmers when he was the one who negotiated them in the first place?

They reduce their cost to remain competitive.

So if they have to reduce their sale price to a point that they can't make money and make a rational decision not to sell at that price, how does that pay off our national debt?

If someone says you have to buy a rifle for $2000 that you know you can only sell for $1800, you just don't buy it. No hard feelings, but you're not going to willingly put yourself in a spot to lose money like that.

I'm speaking in terms of helping manufacturing in the US. If retailers have to choose between a US syrup that was once 10% higher than Canadian but is now 25% cheaper it will make the US brand more attractive. Forcing the Canadian syrup to lower its cost.

I'm not for tariffs but I am for free trade. Canada taxing our products into submission while we let them come in and compete on an even playing field never makes sense.

I'm curious, what percentage on average of a tariff do you think the average consumer will pay? In excess of the previous cost. And what math lays behind that.

I'm mostly curious because I interact with tariffed items daily. And with our tariff department a few times a month on certain items.

We do? Because several companies including a couple of carmakers say they are NOT going to pass on any tariff costs to the end consumer.

Accepting reality is understanding tariffs have a purpose, tariffs level the playing field with other countries who may not share the zeal of f16 for free markets, and that the costs of tariffs is born by different parties in different circumstances.

Even some of Trumps biggest critics have had to eat non-tariffed American made crow over whether Trump was insane or masterful in his approach. As always, Trump falls in the masterful bucket.

Lmao WAHT?!

the businesses which purchase tariffed goods pay the tariff, not the country....

How you and other folks don't f'ing understand this is infuriating at this point

Tariffs albeit understandable to a sense, kill small private business trying to compete with the big guys
