A coalition of Democratic attorneys general is waging a court battle to prevent the Trump administration from obtaining food stamp data on millions of recipients.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta, joined by New York Attorney General Letitia James and 19 other prosecutors, filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on Monday to block the Department of Agriculture (USDA) from obtaining personal information on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients, according to court documents. The filing marks the latest litigation by Democrats opposed to the Trump administration's agenda.

"This unprecedented demand that states turn over SNAP data violates all kinds of state and federal privacy laws and further breaks the trust between the federal government and the people it serves," Bonta said in a prepared statement about the lawsuit.

"While [President Donald Trump] may be comfortable breaking promises to the American people, California is not," the California prosecutor continued. "We will not comply with this illegal demand. We'll see the President in court."

Now, why would they do that? Hmmmmm. Could it be that they are providing benefits to illegals and don't want ICE to have their information? Could they be hiding fraud?

If you take government money, then you are already giving away your personal information. You are giving the government the right to decide things for you since they are giving you money for nothing.

So the state government can have access to this data, but the Federal government, which provides money to those programs cannot access it?!

No kidding they will lose. Those funding mechanisms all come with a right to audit and a right to claw back. The latter is why they will try and prevent the former at all costs.

The fraud and incompetence would need to be refunded to the US Treasury. Its time to bk California.

The consequence of a bailout should be divvying the state up into several new states.

They will lose

After the district court grant a preliminary injunction, the 9th circuit affirms, and an en banc review reverses and stays the injunction.

No thanks. That would just create more senators from blue states and give them the upper hand in the Senate.

Early in my banking career, I inherited a client that was a mobile food delivery service that primarily served in lower income areas. Nearly 10% of their sales were listed as bad debt. When I inquired about it, they basically said that it was ebt cards that were sold for 70-80 cents on the dollar and then after they were used were reported as stolen. The seller would receive a brand new card fully loaded within a few days. The company listed it as bad debt, but the state paid them in full within 90 days.

Add in the fact that the company would buy food at sams or walmart and mark it up 50% for resale. Our tax dollars paid for all that.

The entire system is wrought with fraud.

Oh I think we can carve it up, redistrict it, a bit better than that. So Cal Coastal, Nor Cal Coastal, East Slope Indian Reservation (no senators, no reps - just casinos and dialysis clinics), then 2 or 3 central valley states.

Huh?

The feds should already have this information. The fact that they don't tells you all you need to know about the amount of fraud.
