So, DC socialists decide it's only fair to raise the minimum wage of restaurant workers to that of everyone else. Here are the results:

- 100+ restaurants close their doors over the last two years.

- 2 out of 5 remaining restaurants warn they're in danger of closing if the min. wage for their workers keeps going up.

- Those restaurants that survive raise prices and add surcharges, much to the surprise of socialists.

- Restaurant workers see less income because their hours are cut and no one wants to tip much anymore because prices have gone up.

I guess this time, socialism was (still) NOT different. It failed yet again.

Leftism/Socialism/Communists/DemocRats (big tent party, no?) politics is driven by envy, hate, and greed. Destruction of social norms (family values, upright society, self reliance, independence) is the path of assurance to their end goal. Democrats, especially liberal Democrats, might have theoretically well-intentioned regulatory efforts, but the practical result of those efforts are almost always disastrous. Raising the minimum wage results in more businesses closing and inevitably eliminating jobs. Minimum wage jobs should not be intended to be the career that people depend on to support a family. People that work minimum wage jobs and want to earn more should take it upon themselves to obtain skills and education that would afford them higher paying jobs.

My sister and BIL lived in the DC area for a couple of years while he finished out his military contract. Really great pizza restaurant near their house (can't remember the name).

Anyway, my whole family was up there visiting them, and we went to that pizza joint. My dad picked up the tab at the end of dinner, and they had a "Covid charge" listed. He asked the waitress what that meant. She said it was a separate automatic tip charge that the restaurant used to pay employees when they got Covid and couldn't work. Restaurant refused to take it off the bill.

We spend a fair amount of time in DC. Food costs are outrageous, even without the surcharge. And the service is more often than not awful.

This may be pedantic but I'll say the real minimum wage could be anything including negative. Imagine having the opportunity to work, train, or apprentice under some elite businessman, athlete, artisan etc. There are a lot of people who would be willing to PAY for that opportunity.

My favorite comment in the article. Vote for a pay raise and get a pay cut.

"One irony is that for many servers the supposed pay raise has been a pay cut in disguise. In one survey cited by the restaurant association, 79% of tipped workers said they were getting less money in tips, and 56% were working fewer hours. Overall earnings for a median tipped worker in D.C. have dropped 5% since 2023, or about $1,800 a year, according to the Employment Policies Institute."
