No they aren't. They don't align with anyone. They will make deals with anyone that it makes sense to make deals with at any given time. Russia's giving them cheap oil. They will do what they can to keep the US close at the same time. Telling them to pick one side or the other under threat of sanction isn't the best way to deal with them.

This sounds like what a missionary told me about Hindus: they will accept Jesus , and praise him , but before the sun goes down, their Hindu religion just absorbs Christianity amongst rest of their beliefs and Jesus is equally footing with elephants and Brahmas and whatever else they worship.

They don't do this actually. They pretty heavily persecute Christians in India actually.

Well, the US is pursuing a policy of America First, **** everyone else while Russia is in desperate need of trading partners. Kind of seems like an easy choice if you're India.

On a related note, take a walk through the Zachry Engineering building and tell me we are honoring our land grant mandate to educate Texans first. That place looks like 60% Indian, 30% Chinese, 6% Caucasian, 3% Hispanic, and less than 1% Black. As Dean of Engineering, Dr. Banks once said that we were not producing enough engineers with US citizenship to support our Army Futures Command partnership. The space industry typically requires US citizenship too, which will strain our new space-focused engineering program. Time for admissions to tell Indians and Chinese we're full.

India is the world's largest recipient of remittances - over $125 billion in 2023. That's one of numerous benefits.

How can corporations even pretend Indians are quality workers?!

Maybe the median Indian worker is lacking by global standards, but their brightest top 10% is as big as our entire population, and many have been trained at our universities.

We need safeguards put in place to ensure that they are not cheaper alternatives to American workers. If you want to import their best and brightest to come here you should have to pay.

Unfortunately many of these companies are more than happy to keep them in India working remotely while cutting heads here. That's how I lost my last job.

Reducing foreign student visas by 50-75 percent, and reduction of H1B visas would solve a lot of issues. Ivy League schools would be forced to admit those American born Asians that they love to discriminate against, the shortage of American born engineering talent would increase as now there would be an incentive to get into STEM careers, we'd be less susceptible to corporate and national security espionage as less Chinese nationals would be employed in critical industries. Silicon Valley companies are benefiting from the US corporate environment that incentivizes innovation that's partially funded by the US taxpayers and yet the biggest beneficiaries are foreign nationals ? That needs to end.
These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.-Thomas Paine

That's plenty reason to stop the program for Indians. But the program needed to be much more limited for a long time regardless of this.

They want to please their corporate sponsors. Also, H1Bs are in tech, and I'm sure all these tech workers contribute significantly to the tax base.

If H1Bs are frozen, the housing industry in the Austin suburbs will instantly crash.

All that said, go ahead and freeze H1B immigration.

Tariff on H1B sounds like a good compromise. 100k per. Maybe goes to grants to hire American workers.

Definitely need to force prioritization of and "incentivize" hiring if domestic workers over cheaper foreign replacements.

Fact

I see this on the Seawall in Galveston every weekend.

I have one too.
I went in for a Mustang GT. I won't lie, i was incredibly impressed in 5 minutes. Bought it before i knew it was a brown thing
Too funny.

You accidentally stereotyped yourself.

I know a Middle Eastern guy who bought a particular style of BMW that was very popular with Middle Eastern guys.

Later he tells me, he didn't realize that every other Middle Eastern guy also had this kind of car.

I laughed because I thought that's why he bought it. So he'd look like one of the Middle Eastern bros.

Ah... Just in McKinney or Sugar Land, and the surrounding areas.

It's a more localized impact.

Plus, the H-1B folks aren't buying houses because they're sending all their money home. So they can live like a King when they go back to India.

Being in IT for 20 yrs, I can honestly say it's not an education thing. They can get the education, but the "Asian" culture is so different from ours/Western culture that it's a hindrance to even include them.

Worked with a ton of GREAT Indian people. Most of them weren't any better than our worst American employees, as a whole.

At A&M specifically (and I assume most universities) looks can be deceiving. 70% of engineering students at A&M are undergrads. I can't find an exact percent of international students amongst that group, but there's 8-10% global population of international students at A&M and that number will be MUCH lower for undergraduate studies because it is EXTREMELTY difficult and EXTREMELY expensive for a foreign person to gain admittance and matriculate to an American University as a undergrad (almost exclusively people with +8 figure net worth parents).

Most of the Indian and Chinese looking kids in the Zachary building are the natural born American citizens AND many of them are the children of natural born American citizens. Some of them may be natural born Texans with Texan parents. You're wrongly judging ethnicity and nationality based on looks.

They vote 70% Dem. I post all the time that THE reason California went from red-purple to batshat crazy Dem in the past 20-30 years is the shift of Asian demographic (inclusive of Indians) from ~5% to 15%+ plus. Areas like Carmel Valley, 4S Ranch, etc in San Diego have gone from very res to blue in the last 10 years because of this. I think TX is around 5% now, and if/when that number gets near 10 things will change.

They can get the fertilizer from other countries. There is enough supply out there.

Like oil, they get it from Russia at a significant discount. That's why they don't want to give up the oil.

Russia supplies them about 25%, and China is almost all of the rest of their imports.

I don't believe there are other sources that could cover them collectively

They increased fertilizer imports from Russia after the start of the war because Russia discounted it like 25%. Same with oil.

Before 2022, India's top fertilizer suppliers were Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Oman, and Canada - Russia's share was much smaller.

They are not a friend. I can't wait to see what Trump does next.
