My next vehicle will be a Tesla because of the FSD, when I can't get up into my truck any longer. Inscos are now giving discounts for owning a Tesla. This study says Teslas are 6th highest in odds to last 250k miles among all brands and 3rd among luxury brands. Higher than Ford, Chevy, Mazda, etc. Thoughts?!

Why is this political? Because the Tesla market is now flipping from fewer libs to more conservatives because libs have TDS.

I'm on my third VW. All of them were turbocharged with manual transmissions. I guess I've been fortunate because the first two easily surpassed 200,000 miles and my current one has 100,000 miles.

That said, I would love to own a Tesla model 3.

Honest question.

If a Tesla has to undergo a $40,000 battery replacement at 75k and again at 150k miles, but still makes it 250k miles on the road, is it included as a vehicle that has "lasted 250k miles"? That is an important distinction.

As soon as the industry figures out how to do electricity storage cheaper, lighter, and without the spontaneous combustion risk, the ICE will vanish.

Until then, ICE is better.

Why would an insurance company give a **** if a car can go 250k miles?

Insurance companies dont insure longevity.

The discount is because FSD is safer than a human, not because of vehicle longevity.

I just bought a 2020 Tundra with 297,000 miles on it for $8000. Easily the nicest vehicle I've ever owned and just getting broken in. Sold my 07 Tundra with 265,000 on it for $6000. Was driving my F250 with 190,000 on it more than the 07 but the 20 is so nice I have been parking the F250 more. But my favorite vehicle in our fleet is my wife's 03 Excursion with 220,000 miles. I love driving it on the weekends.

No I won't be getting an EV just because they can go a lot of miles. I need something that can actually haul stuff and move 6 people. There is no EV currently that makes any sense for my family.

And were you doing 5K oil changes instead of the dealer recommended 10K oil changes. My VW mechanic said that 10K were the worst thing to happen.

I own a Ford Mach E (I refuse to call it a mustang) and it's been humming along without any issues. Only thing I've done was a recall for the the High Voltage Junction Box. I've seen reports with these cars easily going over 150K and still keeping about 85-90% of their battery life.

It's just getting broken in at 300k miles? That seems like an outlier. So, what's considered past its prime? Two million miles?

I think the real story is buried deeper in your article. GMC trucks & SUVs are just as likely as Teslas to reach a quarter million miles.

I'm going to consider an EV with my next purchase simply because we already have a new 4WD SUV ICE which we absolutely need where we live. Question for me will be do I want to get a second 4WD, get an ICE sports car, or get an EV.

The EV would be used to run around town only and makes the most financial sense and we already have an EV charger in the garage ready to go. Both sports car and EV will be useless in winters here so I'll be banking on not being able to drive them at times then.

I could also do something like the new Rivian R2 but I'm not sure if they will exist as a company for as long as I would own it. Love the Scout, but doubtful you will be able to get one unless you are famous.

I'm not ready for a Tesla yet, but as a certified old fart, I foresee a day coming where I won't be competent to drive any longer. A self driving Tesla might extend my independence for another decade.

Auto Board has a thread about the Cybercab, that doesn't even have a steering wheel or other controls. Mom turned 96 this month, and needs a little help getting into and out of a vehicle. It won't help her now, but ten years ago, I would have bought her one in a heartbeat.

My wife recently bought a Tesla with FSD....she's annoyed with me because I'm constantly wanting to drive it instead of my '22 Range Rover. Last week, I had to drive to Houston for business...she was out of town so I drove it there. Well, I should say it drove me. It was freakin' cool. It got a little hairy a couple of times in that heavy Houston rain, but it came through like a champ.

Saved a ton on gas obviously. Had to pull over a couple of times to juice it up, but that wasn't a big deal as it gave me time to answer a few emails and hit the restroom. I want to say it was about $20 to "fill it up".

I have a 10 mile drive to work and the excursion is the family and road trip car so I'll likely never find out what "past its prime is". But I have zero concerns with a 5.7 Tundra at 300,000. Especially one that's only 6 years old.

After that you will need to replace the batteries or scrap the Telsa. (~$20K)

Isn't a Tesla battery warrantied for 8 years or 120k miles?

I like the auto-pilot functionality of FSD. Really cool feature. I also like the V2H charging offered with the huge batteries in some EVs. You can install a switch for a bunch of circuits in your house for power outages - keep your lights and fans, modem and router, electronics, kitchen appliances, freezers full of deer meat, etc. going for a week after a hurricane with just your car battery - no $20k generac needed, no hoarding or waiting in hours long lines for cans of gas for a regular generator, etc. ...and I think most EVs if you buy new come with like an 8 year / 100k mile warranty on the battery.

I run my whole house on a portable natural gas generator I paid $1300 for. Maybe $300 in parts for the gas and power connections and I get to use my car for the week the power is out.

I've owned two of the VW TDI Jetta Wagons (one with manual transmission and one auto). I don't think they make them anymore because of the whole exhaust issue. But what a car! I averaged about 55 mpg on the standard, which was well above the advertised amount. And it was really fun to drive, too.

Having seen a local Tesla wreck and ensuing Lithium Ion fire, I'm a hard pass on the EV.

how? You connect to buried gas line with switches installed at your panel, plus equipment is that cheap? I've heard of generac quotes from 12-15k up past 20k installed.

I did the same thing. Easy as hell if you're competent enough to open and work on your electric panel safely. Or can just hire an electrician. Just need an interlock.

1. The batteries aren't $40k

2. It would be under warranty at 75k

Bought a used generator
Added a valve at my gas meter with a quick connect fitting
Generator came with a 20' gas hose with quick connect fitting
Had to buy a 50' 50 amp cord to get to the other side of my house since the breaker panel was on the other side. Installed a generator plug and a dedicated breaker inside the panel for it.

Takes about 8 minutes to roll everything out and set it up when we lose power. Will probably install a generac at some point just for the ease but so far it hasn't been an issue.

I have a 2018 Model 3 with 200,000 miles on it with the original battery. I also have a diesel truck and a ford bronco. Some of you guys that are 1000% against EVs need to pull your head out of whatever its in. These cars are great if your use case fits it.

Edit: Need to add that I absolutely love the Tesla. Interior has held up better than any other make I've had at that age or mileage and Tesla keeps the software up to date where I get the same features as the newest models do.
