Hey Yall!

Former teacher and football coach here. With the end of the school year coming, I have heard from a lot of former colleagues that are wanting to make a change. If you are wanting to talk through what that process might be, let me know. I'm not asking for anything in return but just to be a sounding board to you as you make a big life change. I've also built up a decent network since leaving and will connect you to others who might be hiring if possible. DM me if this is you.

Yeah, there are several threads on the jobs board for teachers who are attempting to leave. Nice post to make.

I'm now working in higher education (university level), so much happier. Still have to deal with some BS, but much less than former BS of being a MS teacher (HS was generally OK for me, once I adapted, but I always wanted to leave).

I don't have much pull at my current employer, but can make suggestions for anyone in East Tennessee.

Another issue - teachers need to be looking the entire year, not just during May-July. Do what is best for you. The school definitely does what is best for themselves (i.e. continually adding on new duties each year, etc.). I left once in November (company recruited me), came back, and left again at Spring Break. Never going back again - I'm allowing my license to lapse. Public education is just increasingly not in a good place. You aren't allowed to teach any longer - it is managed "discipline babysitting".
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

100% this. Honestly, we serve kids that shouldn't be served in a lot of cases. And it is slowing things down for the kids that want to go to school, learn and better themselves. Instead, we are way too concerned with meeting too many kids' needs who really aren't even being helped. The system is VERY broken. That's why I am getting out...

I've been toying with the idea of leaving for the last 5 years, but I think I make too much. I'm in a big district teaching welding making 83k and I have after school duties (alot of them).

If i leave I want to make a pretty consistent 130-150k a year, but as a welding teacher I think my only options are sales, ag sales, equipment sales etc.

Plus I am also trying to get my ranch off the ground (man, that is so much harder than i thought) so the free summers help.

And lastly I just had my son, so summers free mean something different now.

All in all, I have no idea, I like my job but it's exhausting, I work too much and although i make a good amount it's not enough for what i do. Plus the parents suck, like the absolute worst.
I live in waco....therefore, I am ready to move elsewhere.

Totally get where you are coming from. My process to transition took about 2 years to get myself into a mental, emotional and financial position to step away. I will say that most companies have health insurance premiums that will be less than TRS…so you could see an indirect raise there.

Happy to verbally process with you if you'd like because I know the struggle you are going through.

With every illegitimate parental complaint why can't teachers follow up with a "tough ****, go find another school" response? I get schools get funding through enrollment, but how likely will families move all bc their child can't weld? Seems like an unreasonable amount of leverage parents have.

Because teachers have absolutely no leverage. You say the wrong thing to the wrong parent and your principal doesn't back you up - bam, you're gone, or your contract isn't renewed.

Students and parents have teachers held hostage.

In my unique case, I knew I had all the leverage when I was a HS teacher, because I taught math and science, and they couldn't find anyone else who had both certifications. MS - not so much. I only taught math, so I had no leverage.

Had a conversation with a guy who was going to help pack up his daughter's class room. First year teacher and she is calling it quits and looking for something else to do for a career.

This is the new norm. Teachers when I started 20 years ago on average lasted 5 years. The average is now down to 3. I was a part of the recruit and retention committee at one of the better schools in Texas.

They have gone from trying to hire brand new teachers to focusing on culture and bringing in teachers with 10+ years experience and then spending a lot of time with the new teachers we do get with mentoring.

If teacher training programs actually equipped teachers with "what works" (I.e. all the actual practices that have been successful or are currently successful - the how) first rather than theories of education (the why it works), they'd have a much higher retention rate. All we learned were theories - they never taught as actual practices that have/had been successful. We had to figure it out. Which sucks as a new teacher.

You've got to teach the "what" first, and then the "why", IMHO.

I'm a coach/teacher possibly starting to look at transitioning out, or finding other opportunities. What would be a good way to get more information about this?

Question for all those leaving... I'm thinking of getting into teaching after 20 yrs of law enforcement, I'd be looking to teach criminal justice at the high school level, am I crazy to look into this transition?
DfwAg11
How long do you want to ignore this user?
No not crazy. First thank you for your service to the community.

I think you weigh the pros and cons. The real world experience will provide a very rich classroom environment for the students. I loved my job teaching and coaching and left to make more and spend time with my family. Had nothing to do with the actual job. I was fortunate to be in a great district with great admin. At the end of the day, I was investing more in other people's kids than my own kids and needed to make a change.

I will echo DfwAg11. I was also spending more time investing in other peoples kids than my own. I am also looking to transition out of teaching in order to earn more. While I have mostly enjoyed my time in the classroom and on the court, and have had some great experiences, it just feels like the right time for a change.

I'd recommend trying to teach upper level Criminal Justice courses. Those classes usually attract students who have already taken one or two CJ courses and have a real interest in the subject, which makes a big difference in the classroom experience.

Thank you both! I figure not being in a core class and in something that kids actually choose to sign up for should make it better.

I am at a private school in the metroplex. Long story short as a stipend coach I hung around long enough to get hired full-time in kind of an athletic operations/substitute/jack of all trades role in addition to coaching football/baseball. I know it's a rare find to be FT with no teaching and it's nice, but I do sometimes wonder what's next.

Our house is getting very small with two kids. Wife and I would like to move out on a little more land just outside the metroplex (she works from home, likes her job, and makes decent money), but I couldn't justify an hour one way commute. Plus our four year old is scheduled to start preschool so I would be taking him. While I've enjoyed the last decade I wouldn't mind exploring options that pay more and allow some flexibility on where we live. I do have somewhat of a construction background, but not really sure overall what options are out there for someone who has spent their whole career on HS athletic fields.

If you ever want to chat through what it looks like to leave, I'm happy to chat. I've been in corporate America for 7 months now and won't ever go back to education.

Good thread. Hate what public education has become. Can't keep good people. Did all I could to support teachers, but every year, we would be looking at hiring 20-30 new faces at a high school with 2400 students. This time of year was the most challenging. For those still in it, keep fighting the good fight.

We have 207 staff at a campus with 2000 kids and we annually have about 18-20 total staff leave. Some retire, some move closer to home, some were first years that didn't pan out, and some leave after being passed over. We might have 1-2 that leave, because they are getting out of education all together.
