Best way to find remote work?

I have around 18 years as a mechanical engineer. I started out doing CAD design for a medical device company. I then spent a few years in medical devices as a mechanical engineer. For the last 12 years, I have been the sole mechanical engineer doing R&D and new product design at a small company. I design parts and assemblies in sheet metal, CNC-routed plastic, as well as injection-molded plastic. I also have done some UX/UI and web design in creating online customer portals and websites as well as numerous print and digital marketing materials (graphics and copy).

My wife and I are trying to figure out how to have more time at home and potentially move out of the suburbs and get some land while homeschooling our kids, one of whom is autistic (the main reason why we need more time at home).

What are some potential jobs I should be looking for in my search? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Are you looking for a full time position or contract work?

I've used Actalent to hire contractors in the past and some of that was for remote roles.

Good question. I would prefer something steady, but I wouldn't be opposed to a contract. Thanks for the tip.

Hiring.cafe is an incredibly robust job search. You may find something useful.

I will be completely honest. It is a very very competitive remote job market right now. Its now like how it used to be during Covid. There are less and less remote jobs out there, and the market is flooded with candidates looking to work remote. Every remote job posting gets 1000+ applicants.

All of the remote job postings are on Linkedin and Indeed, you just have to filter for remote. Theres no secret recipe to getting one other than mass applying, and being one of the first to apply. I worked remote for a long time before covid, and it took me about 600+ applications to land a remote offer a few years ago after a layoff.

Everyone in the job market these days thinks that it's their birthright to work remote. You'll have a lot better luck convincing your current company to turn your role into a remote one, maybe if for just a few days a week.

No it's not. Get into sales.

Easier said than done. Someone with no sales experience, applying to a remote sales job, is probably not going to even get an interview.

If you are specifically looking for remote work, consider looking at the flexjobs.com site as that is a specialty there. Also If using the career Center's CareerShift resource on HireAggies consider activating the Search by Area toggle so to specify remote jobs
