Not relevant to the outcome, but this really illustrates why I'm against the tush push the way it is done. They shouldn't ban the play outright but they should enforce the rules. 3 of the 5 OL are in the neutral zone here. This is simply not a legal play as currently run.

Yep and it's like that every time. Pisses me off

The worst part is lots of teams have tried to beat it by having their tackles also in the neutral zone and they get flagged

Cowboys had hurts stopped dead in his tracks, actually going backwards on the second one, and 88 and 26 just picked him up and slid him over the defense. Honestly, I don't believe he made it even with that, on the first one. No way that should be legal.

I'm equally as encouraged as I am disappointed. I like what I saw from the offensive line, especially in the run game. I like what I saw from Dak being thinner and healthy. I like that the d line grew into the game and the secondary played well and will only get better as we continue to get healthy. And most of all I loved that we felt like a well run team tonight. But gosh dang does it leave a bad taste in your mouth with your best playing dropping two crucial balls down the stretch; your TE not catching the ball all that well, and your backup RB getting hawked down by a LBer then fumbling.

Overall, about what I expected. Offense looks good, defense needs lots of work.

Javonte looked better than I expected.

Should be a good year.

I'm encouraged…I don't think Lamb is going to drop those over the season…

Dallas was on the road and really played for much of the game…not spying Hurts in the first half was probably the biggest key, but Dallas was clearly focused on stopping Barkley and their receivers…glad they showed in the 2nd half they could spy and still make stops…

Dallas offense was damn good…very aggressive and Dak's accuracy was the best I've seen in a long time…and hell yes…we really can run between the tackles…I thought that was a lost art in Big D…

I went to bed during the delay so thankfully missed the drops. That's a heartbreaker for sure. Didn't realize Lamb has the most drops in the league since 2022. he makes so many tough catches in traffic I guess you forget the easy ones he lets slip through. Throws were perfect from Dak.

I think the coach they got from AZ has paid immediate dividends in the run game. That was a nice surprise. Need a major upgrade at LB.

His drops are usually the mundane kind that typically do not hurt you much, and he usually always makes the tough catch or the catch in the crucial moment. But not last night. That was brutal, awful, all of the above. I don't mind someone who drops the ball on occasion as long as they show up consistently in crunch time, but that wasn't last night.

Sanborn I was fine with by the end of the game, but the other LBer opposite him was pretty poor (Murray and Clark). Overshown will help undoubtedly, but he's going to be out for minimum another month, and I don't think will be back in a full capacity until the end of October.

I thought the exact same thing after that easy drop that killed that 2nd quarter drive. All his drops are easy catches. Can't believe he ripped our hearts out in the 4th.

There is a lot to be positive about, but not right for me. They played so dang well and then shot themselves in the foot with 4-5 plays.

Maybe that's how they can capitalize on the Parsons trade.

Lot less penalties tonight. Eagles were the ones looking stupid. That's another positive.

Besides the dumbass drops, I think the margins were basically that the Eagles are more talented than us in a few spots; RB and LBer in particular. Saquon might be pound for pound the best player in the league, and Baun is a real freak athlete LBer. Those two spots and hurts legs are what beat us sans the drops.

One thing I know for sure after last night... we need Blue healthy ASAP and taking 100% of Sanders' touches.

I can't believe we have a non power back on this team that got chased down from behind by a linebacker. The guy is as washed as Zeke is. I know why we cut Deuce, but I do not understand why he got cut and Sanders stayed.
Tksymm7

Agree. You have to have at least one back with real deal speed in the modern NFL imo, because once you get to the second level you need to be able to run away from LBers and safeties. I really like what we saw from Williams last night but Blue 100% needs to be the compliment to him.

Didn't post on the game thread last night because I was doing some work around the house while watching until the rain delay, but overall, while disappointed, I am a bit more encouraged by this team than I was before.

Positives:
  • Dak looked sharp and had some really nice zip on his passes; he looks to once again have that aggressive, gunslinger mentality that he had in 2023 - will lead to some interceptions, but also moving down the field
  • Javonte Williams looked good; his YPC won't show it, but that doesn't show the whole story; he had the 2 TDs from 1 yard out and had a couple of short down conversions; overall, showed good burst and vision in his opportunities
  • Offensive line - impressed how well they blocked, given it was game 1; seemed to be good in pass blocking and run blocking, outside of a couple of bad plays
  • Secondary - did a good job of covering the Eagles' WRs and limiting the damage; even on the deep ball to Dotson in the 1st half, Elam had good coverage, just a perfect throw
  • Overall discipline - very few drive killing penalties
Negatives:
  • CeeDee Lamb in the 2nd half - no more needs to be said here
  • LBs - slow to react and slow to get to the ball; need to see more out of this group
  • Miles Sanders - can we cut this dude already? Getting caught from behind on a 49yd run by a slow LB and then fumbling 2 players later...yeesh
Anything I missed?

Good list. Only thing I would addI think that was an impressive coaching debut for Schottenheimer and co. For the most part he had the team ready to go for that game. I'm feeling good about this coaching staff and that was a big question mark going into this game.

It's a small thing but in addition to the above, I was impressed with how quickly Schottenheimer took a time out on our final drive of the 1st half when Dak completed one over the middle. We wasted no time since he took that time out immediately. Feel like that was a situation that McCarthy woulda let Dak try to run another play (and waste 10 sec) or waited 10 seconds of indecision and then take a time out.

Overall I agree I was pleasantly surprised, perhaps we won't be terrible this year

Yeah for a guy coaching his first game as HC I thought everything looked much tighter. There were reports practice is much cleaner and better run so hopefully it continues through the season.

Wow, really should have won that game. Late in the season, this loss will sting more.

CD drops were confusing and critical.

Loved Dak. Super cool.

Dak's flying tackle after their fumble recovery was simply awesome and not mentioned enough. QBs just don't make that kinda play. ( Really smacked of Johnny running down that Ole Miss player)

Nice and surprising to see the cowboys will be in the hunt.

Id give the DBs more credit. AJ brown and Smith had 4 catches for 23 yards. That will be the worst performance of those 2 in any game this season.

Yes Hurts scrambled well and took the underneath. But that isnt on the DBs. I personally thought Hurts played very well.

Hurts will never put up crazy stat lines, but he's perhaps the most efficient QB in the NFL. Stays on schedule, gets the ball out to his guys, and remains a threat to run at any time. Tough to beat that when your have talent around you.

I still can't believe 2 of those drops by CeeDee.
The last one you want him to catch, but it would have been a great catch so not as bad a drop as the deep ball that would have put us on the 20 with an excellent chance to walk off win.

I think CD's first drop and Ferg's still have a bit to do with no preseason time. I get wanting to keep them healthy, but this is the first time in 9 months they are thinking about being hit after a catch. Both drops felt like they sensed defenders. I don't want them chasing hospital balls in preseason, but making a few catches and feeling the physical part of the game can have some benefit

They got 2 stops in the 4th quarter, including a three and out on a drive that started with 4:43 left. Only thing they gave up on the 2nd half was a 58 yard field goal.

Allowing Hurts to go free in the 1st half was annoying, but the defense did plenty to win the game, for me.

Yes, live fire for WR would be helpful I think.

Looking at the "madden football cam" (view from behind Dak) of the deep crossing route that Lamb dropped on that last drive.... I'm wondering if Tolbert distracted him just enough on that one.

Not sure if Tolbert ran the wrong route or what, but you don't usually have 2 WR in the same area. Tolbert was running a seem right up the middle and Lamb flashed around 5 yards in front of him and the trailing DB right as the ball was arriving.

It was still a ball that fell right into his lap so no excuses, but it sure felt like those guys, at the last minute, popping into his peripheral vision could have been the main cause.

I dont know about Sanders. The fumble was bad but his long run was one of the better running back reads I've seen from a Cowboy in recent memory. He got caught by Baum who is a pretty freaky athlete. Williams is a beast when healthy. I recall him being impossible to tackle a couple seasons ago.

Getting Overshown back to be a spy on Hurts will be big. I thought his scrambling neutralized everything the Cowboys accomplished on defense.

Yeah, that's the defending champ with some serious weapons on O, and the defense played plenty well enough to win. Hard to see Hurts run, but part of that was a price for containing Brown and Smith. The offense had 3 solid cracks to take a lead and blew it.

Sanders is washed. Baun is not a fast linebacker at all. He plays fast but his 40 speed was only 4.65.

We're talking specifically about spy to get stops on hurts.

Definitely. Collinsworth in particular would not shut up about Parsons and how the Cowboys were getting torched by Philly in the 1st half (which was fine, he's just doing his job and Micah was one of the big narratives).

But I didn't feel that way at any point in that game. Our defense looked solid across the board... Philly quite literally nickel and dimed us to death and it was 90% Hurts just constantly getting 3-4 yards and moving the chains. And when Philly needed a bigger play, they spread us out and Hurts ran.

We were the better team on the field last night, they just didn't make any mistakes and we made around 5 BIG mistakes, 3 of which were our all pro WR.

Im starting to question the decision to give Sanders the carry on the 1. I've heard before that those 40-50 yard sprints gas the running back. I think the coaching staff wanted to reward Sanders with a TD instead of doing what was the best team move and handing it off to Javontae.
shack009
How long do you want to ignore this user?

They handed it off to Sanders on the next play after the long run, and that was the Pickens penalty. I believe Javonte Williams came in for the next 3 plays. Sanders was brought back in after the penalty in the end zone. And the ball was on the 11.
