The previous page on this thread had some good discussion about ammo caliber for self defense. I'll share a funny comment from an instructor years ago, when our class was debating .45ACP vs 9mm - "Would you rather get hit by a Mac truck going 40mph or a Volkswagon going 80?".

mailed mine in around the first week of June. Just received my PIN in today's mail. "Processing Application" on website.

Questions from a newbie.

I think I'm going with a Ruger LCP as a first gun because of its ease of concealment.

Questions:

1. There is no safety correct? So you need to move the slide after you draw your weapon.

2. Academy has them for $349. Any better deals out there?

3. Anyone care to suggest a specific holster?

4. If you pocket carry, do you use any type of holster device when pocket carrying?


I'm thinking of getting a second larger gun, perhaps a Colt 1911 Defender to keep in the truck or use with cold weather clothing. I think I like the idea of a .45 but if I only have one more handgun to augment the Ruger LCP should it be a 3" 1911 or maybe the Commander? I'd like to be able to conceal the second gun at times without hassle. I've got home protected with a 12 gauge 870 and a Mini-Schnauzer(:

ETA: Sent mine in around March 18. Took approx. 3.75 months for approval (didn't check yesterday so it might have passed then). How long does it take for it to be mailed?

Whoop! I just checked mine since I saw yours was completed and I got those 7 sweet words as well.

Mine took a little longer... I sent mine initially about 12/30/08. Had a delay due to my instructor, but im glad its finally coming in.

I think it can still take up to a couple weeks to actually get it in hand.

Anyone else have any idea how long it takes for it to ship?

ETA: Mailing address was my home and residence was my apt in Bryan. Will the Bryan one be the one on the Card? Might be a problem since I won't be there much longer...

How many different places have you lived/worked? Heard they have to do background checks in each county.

Of course the way the FBI backgrounder works for buying guns (hooray for instant gratification) I don't know why the chl one takes so long.

Have also heard they're taking some out of turn because people are threatening legal action when it takes longer than 90 days.

Just some stuff I have read here and there.

I would say if its been more than 70 days, call/email your representatives. I had one that was helpful and the other didn't care.

I also emailed rep Driver, who I believe is the head of the committee that is in charge of CHLs.

if i call a rep, does that just tick the dps office off? what exactly can a rep do to expedite the situation?

If you call, for one, it increasingly puts pressure on the representative to actually do something about the problem at the DPS.

If they are having record # of applications doesn't that likely mean record amounts of money coming in? So why isn't some of that increase going to hire more people to help ease the backup in processing?

Also, over on texaschlforum they often say "the squeaky wheel gets the oil." There are at least a few stories of people calling and their rep getting involved and then getting their CHL within a week. It might be a coincidence, and it might not.

They recently hired 3 more people to process CHL applications.

i definitely recommend calling your rep if you've been waiting awhile.

You guys ever get this message after the processing application message shows?

I have heard of it happening but It never happened to me.

A couple things to check:

Make sure you didn't try to check status of an instructor's license

Make sure all the info is right when you type it in.

If you keep gettin gthe same things for a few days, call and find out what is the problem. It might just be a glitch in there system.

Call up the muni court and get the records. Yes you would get caught by DPS, and it would be way more hassle than its worth. Paid site don't always show everything.

21 days from the day I mailed it off!!!

Texas must have known that my only Christmas wish this year was a quick approval and card-in-hand!

I was at the gun show in Houston a couple of weeks ago. There was a guy there selling CHL courses, his paperwork (which I somehow didn't end up with) said that the rules/test were all changing soon and we needed to sign up asap. Does anyone know about the new rules/test?

The place I found guarantees the lowest price at 119. I that a good price. It's lower than everyone else who was at the gun show. That price includes;

• Mandatory ten hour course taught by TDPS certified instructor
• 2 sets of fingerprints
• 2 passport photos
• 3 Notarized affidavits
• student packet will all necessary paperwork and help filling that paper work out
• eye protection
• ear protection
• range fee
• required b-27 target

Is that all I need, cept gun and ammo?

That not a bad price, but there are better out there if you start shopping around.

I paid $100, and mine included all that.

Champion in CS does all that for $75 for first timers and $50 for renewals...

Took me one month to get mine (today!)

I applied for my CHL and I'm thinking about the S&W 642. I think it will be the best choice. Now.... Where to find one.
