got a question...somewhat releated to all this:

My powered attic fan (comes on to vent when it gets to a certain air temp in the attic) went out.

Do I call a roofer, A/C man, or electician to replace?

Here is the skinny. Around July 20, I installed a attic tent in my upstairs & downstair attic door. They definately work. On July 26, I had my upstair & downstairs attic sprayed with sherwin williams radiant e-barrier paint. My home is 2story with 3800 sft. My june-july bill was $400.00. My july-aug bill was $396.00. The radiant barrier was not installed during the entire billing cycle. The billing cycle run 11th of each month. the outside temperature in Friendswood during the july-aug billing cycle was hotter than the june-july cycle. I will be receivieng by sept bill around the 17th but the outside temperatures are averaging lower. I plan to add a little insulation & the radiant barrier foil on the attic floor in the winter.

I will give you guys a report once I get the latest bill. I had the foil installed about a month and half ago but during that time, I switched from Cirro to Direct Energy because Cirro jacked up my rate from 13cents per Kw/hr to 16 cents. So I haven't gotten the bill with a full month of post RB install yet.

Instead of reporting the $ amount, I'll report the KW usage. That's a better indicator I would think.

Agree that kwhrs used is critical. Also if any vacation or other such thing occurred that would have otherwise altered electricity usage from normal.

If you get foil, don't put it on the floor of your attic. The purpose of Techshield or another Radiant Barrier is to keeping radiant heat OUT of your attic.

Again, Paint is NOT classified as a Radiant Barrier....

You're blocking 60% on avg. of Radiant heat with paint and foil blocks over 90%. TS is at 97%

ROI with TS Foil will be around 2-3 years, depending on the different housing variables.

Ok, here is my report.

August 11 to September 10, 2007 - 4,111 kwh
August 11 to September 10, 2008 - 2,890 kwh

Same thermostat settings, no vacations.
Installed foil radiant barrier in Mid July of 2008.

atmHockey - an electrician can replace the motor in your vent fan.

I don't do electrical work for a living, but easily replaced mine not too long ago. I made sure the electricity was off, removed a couple of bolts, replaced w/new motor, ensured the fan blades didn't rub and voila.

It's not an exact science since I can't account for the variation of outdoor temperature between 2007 and 2008 for the said period.

Regardless, we felt much more comfortable in the house. Subjective placebo perception? Quite possibly. But who cares. Our perception is our reality. And more than 1,000 kwh less for the same period? That's huge.

Monday morning bump!

Just received my aug 12 - Spt 15 bill. The kwh used was 2046 & my bill was $244.00. I know that the temperature is Sept. was lower than in Aug. but I was suprised at the drop. My kwh usage for july 7 - aug 12 was 3279.

how much insulation did they add when the sprayed in the radiant barrier?

No extra insulation was added and I didn't get the spray radiant barrier. I have the stapled foil radiant barrier. If you scroll back through some pages, you'll see the pictures.

I would think it would be hard to get motivated to install RB while it's cold...

I'd rather install it with a jacket on than coming down out of the attic every 15 minutes for fear of heat stroke.

I'll be doing this in the winter as well. The damn dust really gets to you though.

You can either spend 2-300 bucks to do it yourself, or 3 grand.

ROI of 2 months if you do it yourself!
