Statism (and its derivatives, such as socialism, in centuries past it might have been the 'divine right of kings' or any other form of tyranny) fails, not because one group of thugs happened to get it wrong, but because its contrary to human nature.

I always thought it was ironic that Marx decried religion when it was exactly what he needed to implement his “system” whereas Adam Smith embraced its place in the free market. I hope that everyone that’s currently reading Atlas Shrugged will follow it up by reading The Wealth of Nations.

Great thread here. On the recommendations from those who posted, I picked up these books:

- Into Thin Air (Krakauer)
- Lone Survivor (Luttrell)
- Plugger (Grigar)
- The Big Rich (Burrough)

Should be plenty to keep me reading during the next 8 days in Virgin Gorda (British Virgin Islands). Will report back on the reading.

Another one like Signel's is

The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedomhttp://www.amazon.com/Long-Walk-True-Story-Freedom/dp/1558216847
It's about these four guys who escape from a Soviet prison camp and walk from Siberia to British India.

One Author I love is Lawrence Millman. Great non-friction, mainly about explorations in the Arctic. Hard to find though as most of his work is out of print.

If you want to freak yourself out (good eye opener), I would try "Mindhunter" or "Journey into Darkness" by John Douglas.

"Night of the Grizzlies" by Jack Olson is pretty interesting.

"The Beast in the Garden" by David Baron is one of the best books I have read in a while. It looks at the background behind the biology and socialogy prior the the mountain lion attacks/fatalities in Boulder.

One of my favorites: Islands in the Stream - Hemingway. IMHO its one of his best and most underrated. It has some fishing in the gulf stream in it, some very hard drinking and some pretty good action with the ladies. Basically an autobiography of myself and Hemingway.

Almost anything by John McPhee. Start with "Coming Into The Country," true stories from Alaska. All of his work is non-fiction.

"Citizen Soldiers", by Stephen Ambrose, who also wrote "Band of Brothers". It is set in the European theater, from D-Day to the end of the war.

"The Coming Plague", by Laurie Garrett. About newly emerging diseases such as Ebola, and the people who hunt them down.

The best book I've read in the past several years is "Gates of Fire", by Pressfield (sp?). It is fiction, but set in the true events and people leading up to the battle at Thermopylae. Great ending too, even when you know what happens to the main body of Spartans...

Mostly Tailfeathers: Stories About Guns and Dogs and Birds and Other Odds and Ends by Gene Hill. A very entertaining collection of short stories about shooting, bird hunting, fishing, and the outdoors in general. If you're like me several of them will seem autobiographical.

King Rat by James Clavell. It is a mixture of fiction and autobiography as he uses this book to write about his time as a POW in Changi prison during WWII.

Some great recs here.

I'm re-reading Steinbeck's "Travels with Charley." Good stuff. Next on tap is Corbett's "Maneaters of Kumaon."

In that same vein is John Patterson's "Maneaters of the Tsavo." it was the basis for the film "Ghost and the Darkness."

Gates of the Alamo is historical fiction. There are some interesting ideas discussed especially regarding the idea that no Texian escaped the Alamo.

I am on a long time mission to re-locate a book called "Johnny Christmas." I don't recall the author as I was given the book 20 years ago, loaned it to several friends and never got it back. It is historical fiction that begins with a young man riding with a raiding party Texians during the Texas Revolution, then follows his life through beaver trapping in the Rockies, marrying an indian, having his horse stolen by a cavalry officer--great story.

The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire that Saved America by Timothy Egan

Fascinating read on the formation of the Forest Service and how they battled one of the largest forest fires in US history.

Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History by S.C. Gwynne

There were moments in this book where my jaw dropped amazed at the skills of the Comanche. You do not want to mess with these people.
