Can't believe this was almost 9 years ago.

Well I think I remembered the lead in pretty well. Neel truly loved his patients. He dealt with a lot of Friday night shootings and took pride in his work.

On that night he had just seen one to many kids paralyzed for life via an ATV.

This is a thread bump I can get behind. Thanks for digging it up.

My friend's dad got shot in the stomach w/ a 7mag when I was in college…. ~2007-2008.

I wonder if NW80 was involved in the surgery? I believe I remember dr Duke's name

Wow. At what range? 7 mag to the abdomen? Very lucky to have survived that injury.

Not sure. They were hog hunting and someone else shot him (thought he was a hog iirc). He lived about another 10 years, died a few years back

Maybe close enough range the bullet was still screaming and didn't expand? That's all one could hope for in that situation. I know that pain, and that's a BAD day no matter how you slice it.

Usually when people are this cranky, they are sick and might not even realize it. I wonder how the fella is doing lately or if he is still alive.

NW passed away 2-3 years ago. OG trauma surgeon and OB legend.

I remember that. He was one of the best Deere mechanics and very dependable. Great guy also.
iirc, he was hunting at night with his best friend that he had hunted with for many years. The story I remember was his friend was following a moving hog in his optic at night and never realized the pig had moved in line with his hunting partner. Tragic accident.

Haha...Dr. N.W. was a narcissistic A hole in real life..we need more like him. As for Tandy, more likely he worked on your dad's friend than Dr. Duke at the time.

Both men incredible. Dr. Duke deserved a Nobel. NW was a heck of surgeon. RIP Men

I miss talking to that crusty old coot. He was a helluva guy. And even though he never had kids of his own he delighted in teaching kids. He showed me all the plans he had for his place he was going to build in Port Mansfield (he was only a month or two from breaking ground on his land when he passed) and kept telling me how he wanted me to bring my boys down.

I accidentally answered with a coworker in the car once. That was an interesting call.

Not always but it was not infrequent to hear him gripe about "Schmells-bad"

Hell, he called and started *****ing me out on at least on occasion or another. I'd usually bait him a bit and he'd finally chuckle and say something like "You ****er, gotta go. Be careful."

This is 100% true! He would go on rants about stuff for 30 minutes and stop in the middle of rant to prescribe some medication for a patient or two and then go back to his rant. Funny as hell!

He started to dress me down exactly one time. I told him, "wait one ****ING minute, you don't know what's going on."

He laughed and once again offered me a job.

My favorite is still the conversations he would open with "if I had met you 20 years ago, we'd have raised a whole handful of linebackers"
