I would wonder why they'd assume anyone not found yet is dead. Yes, it's been 3+ days now, but you can survive for almost a week with no food. Water would obviously be an issue.

Experience.....

Finding a live victim at this point would be truly miraculous.

However, miracles do happen.
Yep. It is sad to say, but the people involved in these rescues have been involved in situations like this before. My wife has some experience with these types of situations, and one of the things she has been saying is to pray for the people searching. It is really tough on them too, having experienced it before and wanting the best outcome for the families involved. They themselves probably having families, and some of them directly connected to the families of folks they are looking for. God bless them.
Agree. Praying for all these fine people.

My brother was on the Hunt VFD. Once there was a car washed off the river crossing upstream from our house. He sat out at the next river crossing all night watching, never saw anything. It wasn't until days later that they pulled debris from around the culvert they found the body there trapped underwater. Even though he was exactly where they expected him to be it still took a good amount of time to recover.

You see the massive amount of debris in these videos, there's similar debris under the water where bodies could be trapped. With the area it's spread across, it's very possible some may not be found.

Thanks for all the prayers and support. I still have my peace and strength from the Lord. This is going to be a really tough week for all the families who lost loved ones so keep those prayers coming.
Continuing tireless prayer for your family derm, and the others still waiting. Lifting up the search teams as the work through such a heavy weight as well.

Yes, mucking crews will be in great demand. There will probably still be a pretty big need from supplies like toilet paper, water, mops, brooms, shovels and so forth.

Im reaching out to groups here in Austin but it a disappointingly, but understandably, pretty closed circuit to randos who are willing to perform single acts that isnt money or arent part of whatever orgs volunteer base/training schedule.

I ran a volunteer organization(though we were a firm established, constant organization that provided services that werent in response to disasters) for many years so im intimately aware of how hard a guy like me is to accommodate.

Thank you for the testimony. Tragedy is a part of this fallen world. God is good. All the time.
Your faith in the midst of this devastating tragedy encourages us all, derm. I've found that the faith necessary to believe in God in the first place is easy; the faith to trust God and believe in His love when horror strikes is the tough part.
Reminds me of John 16 33

I have told you these things so that in Me, you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
I've been following this thread since the beginning and praying for all involved, but especially for those closely connected to our friends on this board.

Derm - I've mainly known/interacted with you on the Baseball board, and I enjoy all of your contributions there. I usually don't know the right words to say in these situations, so I just keep to reading and praying, but this post here was enough to make me say something. Your faith, strength, and resilience through all of this is truly inspiring. And while I know you would absolutely prefer to not be so closely involved in this tragedy, I have no doubt that you and your example are being used by God to positively affect countless people in ways we can't even imagine. Keep the faith, brother.

Social media is FULL of bull**** AI generated stories. George Strait gives $3.5 million, UT gives $50 million, Sark in Kerrville hugging kids...hell, I even saw a headline that said something like "A&M basketball star donates entire $10 million signing bonus to Kerrville Flood victims." Then it showed a pic of A.C. Law, who is now almost 20 years removed from A&M and 11 yrs removed from the NBA.

I appreciate the level-headed, trust-but-verify account of what is going on here on this thread.

I trust this group more than the internet, so posing this question here.

This is probably even too early but our employee group here in houston wants to help. We would be willing to collect gift cards, cash, or physical items. We just don't know who the best organization to donate to is at this point. We are a credit union so we can collect from our employees and members and potentially help many folks. Any direction would be appreciated.
Reach out to Samaritan's Purse. They are excellent.

I feel like Samaritans Purse and HEB are really the only organizations I trust.
I did disaster relief full time for a couple of years and SP and HEB and Home Depot were always on site, visible, and impactful. Zero question they are worthy of support. But if anyone wants to get even more granular, the local churches I always felt had the best handle on the situation in terms of organization and disbursing of supplies and care to those who needed it most. Makes sense of course. They live there, it's their people and their compassion is unmatched. They often already have teams set up for just this sort of thing and hit the ground running from minute one. However, they can sometimes be difficult to find ways to get donations to, so the above are safe bets as well in my experiences.

I would just say, everyone should keep your dollars away from Red Cross and federal resources. I won't go into particulars here, this is not the thread for that, but I personally know your aid will be more impactful elsewhere is where I will leave it.
We attend a United Methodist church and do special collections for events such as this that get transferred with no administrative fees to the local UM church in the area to distribute to people in the area. I think it definitely helps to have locals that know the area and are more in touch with the needs in the community.

The Fox 4 rainfall graphic going around showing the 3 trillion gallons I don't believe is correct. I think they did some funny math to be more sensational.

3 trillion gallons is equivalent to 9.2 million acre ft. Canyon lake at conservation pool is only about 350k acre ft of water storage and then flood pool is about 1m acre ft. Even using a really low runoff coefficient like 0.3 the reported 3 trillion gallons would be enough to fill the lake from empty to the top of the spillway 3 times and there's only been an 11ft rise total.

The real amount of rainfall over just the Guadalupe was probably more on the range of 5ish billion gallons.

Not all of the storm fed into the Guadalupe. A large amount also went to the Llano River, which would bypass Canyon.
No idea if the math checks out, but if it does, the Llano certainly does not account for the remainder. Not that it really matters but the math of it interested me.

IMO its still too early to spend resources on cleanup unless directly related to improving access. Focus and any resources available should still be placed on rescue.

That said from my experience:

Snow shovels work best on muck.
If using or managing heavy equipment on debris piles, please break apart and inspect by hand, before potentially desecrating someone's loved one.

Gloves, eye protection, extra clothes, your own water & snacks.

If volunteering, go past the crowds and find the more remote. Ask for permission, say your sorry and get to work, it will be obvious what needs to be done, they will speak to you, and open up with their experiences when they are ready. Sometimes insurance will prevent or ask you to leave, if that happens just move to the next.

Be prepared to see things unbelievable. The force of nature is…..

I just wanted to extend my prayers to everybody here who has been directly or indirectly affected by this awful tragedy.

I was out on the 4th and didn't know what had happened until I got home that night. While I'm more of a lurker on Texags these days, I came here and found this thread. I've been refreshing it constantly ever since. I don't have a personal connection to anybody who is directly affected by this tragedy, but indirectly, I am heartbroken. The thought of so many innocent children taken from us too soon. Knowing that countless families and vacationers were in the area for the 4th, who are now lost forever. I fear there are more victims than the authorities even know about, considering all the various campsites, and some of whom may never be recovered. It's been haunting me since the night of the 4th, when I started reading all the various stories about the horrors people faced early that morning.

I'll also note that, just like some others on this thread, I'm somebody who hasn't prayed much in recent years. Seeing the strength that God has given so many of you here, despite such a horrible tragedy, has led me to start praying again. I hope that dermdoc and anyone else personally affected will be able to find strength in God to help get through this.

Also, thank you to everybody here for providing such an amazing community. As others have mentioned, discussions of this tragedy on other social media platforms are a cesspool, to put it lightly. It's disgusting to see how vile and evil people can be in light of an event like this. I am so happy that we have this place.

Rainfall calculator (English units): How much water falls during a storm?

I figured 450 square miles (15 miles x 30 miles) for my calculations

total gallons = 78,203,520,000

"July 7th Words Can Heal"

"Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing." Proverbs 12: 18 NLT

"If our hearts are not aligned with God, that will come out of our mouths. People who aren't checking their hearts with the Word might as well give up watching their tongues. The condition of our hearts reveals the direction of our eternal souls by the way we speak, the looks on our faces, and the attitudes we show to others."

"When God says the Word became flesh in John 1: 14, we start to see how important words are. God chose words as the vehicle for his truth and salvation. Our words are not living; only his have that power. God does speak through us to bring others to the kingdom, and if we are only interested in spouting our own drivel, we will miss opportunities to give the Lord room for his wisdom, honesty, and healing to come through our mouths."

"Lord Jesus, speak through me. Use my words and heart to bring healing to a hurting world. Allow me to be your vessel. Amen."

Note- I just called the church to confirm. They do not want more volunteers or chainsaws right now. Probably in a week.

The fire department has taken control and is not allowing volunteers to start debris clearing until they have exhausted recover efforts.

been following this post the last few days.. amazing stories, amazing people.. like everyone else here says, no words for any of this horrible situation..

i did think of one thing, havent seen mentioned (maybe missed it).. im a little surprised thinking back none of these youth camp cabins have life jackets by the river?.. i have two older daughter who attended camps in the hill country over the years, so all very relatable.. and as i think about it, why don't we put 12 life jackets on the walls in every 12 person cabin etc?.. doesnt guarantee saving a life, but would help the chances. i wouldnt be surprised to see this be a big topic later on among law makers.. something to the effect that any youth camp cabin within x feet from a river be required to have a life jacket per camper. i think back to my daughters river based camps over the years, pretty sure they didn't have anything like this in place.. didn't think about it until this happens.. tragic

Y'all I'm a lifelong Longhorn, feels pretty weird to be making a TexAgs account. I wasn't going to butt in, but I have a couple contributions I hope are valuable.

I've seen people ask about getting involved in SAR, and while we know we can't get out there ASAP and get in the way, it seems like this has been a spark and some of y'all may want to get trained and certified so you can be ready when there's a next time. I encourage you to look into TEXSAR. I'm not affiliated at all but my husband has deployed with them in the past, including to Houston after Harvey and some local missing persons searches. They've been on the ground doing good work out there and they also accept donations. I am comfortable recommending them as an organization to give money to.
https://www.texsar.org/join-texsar

For those of us who may not be prepared to recover victims but are animal lovers, Austin Pets Alive is looking for volunteers, supplies, fosters and donations as they take in dogs and cats from Kerr and Williamson counties. I am not affiliated with them either but they are a good group I am also comfortable donating to, and I'm hoping to be fostering with them soon.
https://www.austinpetsalive.org/blog/helping-our-neighbors-affected-by-devastating-floods-in-kerr-county

Also since someone mentioned sirens, this is just spitballing now but I think with all the magical summer camps in the most dangerous flood valley in the country, a lot of us are questioning why there wasn't already an extremely robust flood warning and response protocol in place. I looked into it a little yesterday and it seems Kerr County considered a system of sensors and sirens like other counties have, but determined the taxpayers wouldn't go for it due to cost. Not engaging in politics or blame, just saying surely with so many people now looking for ways to give, someone could fundraise to privately fund a warning system that could buy crucial minutes when the water is rising fast.

Lastly I just want to thank y'all for this thread. I have been glued to it for 3 days now crying and hoping with y'all and so grateful for the responsible updates and discussion. I used to babysit a couple precious Camp Mystic girls in college who somehow grew up and are now in college babysitting little Camp Mystic girls. I believe their charges were found safe but they know several of the campers and counselors who were lost as well.

Thank you again and I hope to meet some of you on a cleanup crew in the coming weeks.
