Thanks for posting this picture of La Junta. I was in all of them myself along the hillside. Crazy to see one of the newer cabins washed off the foundation and about 100 yards away. I wonder if anything is left of the swimming dock and swing.

Only he knows where he got story came from and if it was confirmed and how. He's not the first journalist to commit the sin of publishing what turns out to be a false story. Everyone makes mistakes and bad decisions at work.

So which cabin was in the video floating? From the shots it must have been an LJ cabin then?

I wouldn't go about crapping on the Kerr County Lead for posting that original story. Small town newspapers are generally one or two person operations. Shoot, they probably know a lot of the folks affected too. The guy made an unfortunate mistake and has owned up to it.

They do excellent work. We had them here in Rockport after Harvey and we contributed to them when they were in North Carolina for their disaster. They walk the walk!!!!
Do not give to Red Cross, they did NOTHING to help after Harvey, in fact, they were a hinderance.

I will say when we had the explosion here in West in 2013, the Red Cross was very helpful to a lot of families, including ours. Since then, I've been careful about generalizing these organizations. There are several good ones though. God bless them all.

Is this an actual media outlet? Or just one of those citizen journalists?

So were they able to stay in cabins like giggles/wiggles because the ceilings were so high?
What we know is just from first hand accounts at the moment.

We know that some cabins (like Wiggle Inn) were able to survive the flood on bunks/mattresses inside their cabins.

We know that some cabins scrambled on foot to higher elevation and were rescued there (like apparently Chatterbox)

We know that some cabins were evacuated together to the second floor of the Rec hall.

For Twins and Bubble Inn, the best guess is that they were on foot in the moment the flash flood surged.

The labeled photos and the Chatterbox story make this even more tragic. There was actually higher ground, but nobody thought they would need it. Everyone could have scrambled up that hill if they had acted soon enough. The camp had been there a hundred years, so I'm not here to throw stones. Perhaps all overnight use camping and camps in the flood plain should be required to have evacuation areas outside the flood zone that are easy to access. I'll bet nobody there knew that they had evacuated into the flood zone.

And this was more like ****et in its suddenness. Awful.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough

It's heartbreaking to think that if the Bubble Inn campers had stayed in their dorm like Wiggle right next door they may have survived.

Thank you for this photo and explanation. My boys were all there first term - a counselor and twin CITs (1B - dislike that). Anyway, I have had so many concerned friends reach out about the floating cabin. Grateful it did not house campers, and most grateful all CLJ boys are safe. Our Mystic girl was there for her 13th year. I think I said that before. Things are muddled. We gathered all our kids last weekend and headed out on a trip together. Still away. They are distraught and I am having to grab their phones away for breaks. We are all praying and I so appreciate TexAgs as a resource for years and years.

I hate to bring sad news but this is unlike. Wiggle had vaulted ceilings but Bubble did not. This is why Wiggle and Giggle could ride out the flood but Bubble tried to get out.

Folks,

I have 2 daughters (a bit older and have never attended Camp Mystic).

But I would be remiss if I didn't say I have significant empathy for all families involved.

1. Those that are still awaiting for news on girls
2. Those that got awful news that their daughter(s) were recovered.
3. Those that were fortunate to have their girls returned/rescued. I suspect the trauma will require counseling.

I can only donate to local causes and track aircraft for the group.

So, you have someone with 2 daughters that have wept for all of you.

Well not sure how CNN got to him, but the article above is indeed Glenn... Glenn Juenke (pronounced Yin-kee). I have had DMs from posters asking me to give his info to ABC reporters and Good Morning America so Glenn if you are reading this and interested, other Glenn has my phone #.

Please guys be respectful of his privacy. He lost very close friends and endured quite a rough go of it himself. He's a great man and a true hero and like most true heroes he probably doesn't feel like the Titan he is.

Please give him respect and space. He has earned it.

Here is my attempt to take the cutesy drawn camp map and put it onto the actual arial map of the camp. I may be slightly off with the cabins in the treeline but I am pretty sure this is fairly close to correct.

This is a good depiction. The creek between senior hill and the office area (where the cabins of the lost girls were) prevented the girls from getting to senior hill which is higher elevation. There are unconfirmed reports that Dick Eastland might've been shuttling girls across this creek before the water got too high. We know he was helping move girls by truck. The cabins in a line starting at Bug House are at much lower elevation than Bubble and Twins. Some of them evacuated to the Rec House and it appears that some (Chatterbox) climbed the hill behind them to the place on the drawn map listed as "Sky High"

I want to reiterate that it is extremely hard to really know but this is what I have been able to put together from my wife who attended and worked at Mystic before we were married and the other first hand accounts. You can see some of my other posts as well as Badace52s for explanations

I was a camper and counselor at LaJunta from 74-82. I remember the flood in 78' it started raining at closing ceremonies and the flash flood hit that night. 24ft high Spooners van ended up in a tree 18ft in the air close to the hunt bridge. It remade the entire waterfront with tons of rocks deposited below the outdoor theater.

I really can't imagine water 34 ft! In my day all but one cabin was close to the hill cabins 99/100 was by what is now the dining hall.

Amazing they did not lose anyone but the hill is climable and there are two roads that go up the hill.

My daughter went to Honey Creek and my niece is currently a counselor. They were lucky since the creek is just a tributary to the Guadalupe and they did not have as much devastation and all the campers were out of harms way.

What saved the boys lives was the exposed rafters in those old cabins and bravery from
the counselors, just kids themselves, that I can only hope I would have in that situation, but also hope I never have to find out. The Mystic girls didn't have rafters to hang onto and got swept out. Thank God for those rafters and those counselors.
