Alright small engine gurus

Bad dad left some old fuel in the go karts

Drained tanks and cleaned carbs/jets

Got em running but one dies at idle

Got the idle set screw turned all the way in

Still dies at a stop

Runs like a top with throttle

Drove it a couple of miles without a hiccup

Dies when u stop

Ideas?

Cleaned the idle jet with carb cleaner, but didn't have any small gauge wires to hit the holes with

Buy new carburetor on Amazon and install, it'll run like new

Dirty air filter? Dirty plugs?

Cleaned air filter

Probably a good idea to just replace it, spark plug, and carb

It's an idle jet clog. Soak the carb overnight in a good carb solvent.

Might need to run it through an ultrasonic cleaner. Varnish from ethanol is difficult to get off with out damaging the internal passages in the carb. Heated ultrasonic cleaner will have it come out looking like new.

Would also consider whether the fuel tank is properly vented. If the vent is on the cap make sure the holes and screen isn't clogged with dirt, oil, spiderwebs etc.

My bro in law is a sling blade level small engine guru. He says you just really need to run ethanol free gas and steer clear of amazon carbs as they are made with plastic innards that easily degrade and you will be buying a new carb in 6 months if you use one of those. I am no engine tinkerer but he definitely knows a thing or two.

Makes sense to take all jets out and disassemble the entire carb to the extent possible. Then you put all the parts and the carb body in the ultrasonic cleaner basket and let it run on a cycle. All parts will come back clean and bright and with a new gasket kit you starting fresh about as good as you can get.

If you find somewhere with a cleaner you can use I'd bring some fine wire mesh to make sure no small parts get lost in the cleaner.

Looks like I can just get a new carburetor for less than an US cleaner and solvent

I replaced the carb on a Honda engine in about 15 minutes. Mower sat with gas for too long and varnished up the carb. I was angry the amount of time wasted trying to clean the carb and trying to start that mower.

Price of new Honda carb was about $75 to $80.

After installing carb the darn thing started up on first pull.

Thinking I will replace the fuel filter and fuel/vacuum lines while I replace the carb

Check fuel cap venting, replace as needed

Appreciate everyone's help

You've got a jet that's still plugged. Personally, I wouldn't replace it with Chinese junk from Amazon. They are inferior to your factory carb unless you have A Chinese go cart and Chinese motor already. I've done a couple hundred various carbs over the years and some are just a pain in the ass.

I do use Amazon carbs for testing. If I can't get a carb cleaned I'll buy an Amazon carb and throw on to see if the carb is even the issue. If it is, then the carb goes back to Amazon and I keep working on the OEM one.

Inside the throat of that carb may be some pinholes and you can get a carb cleaner set of wires on Amazon that will fit those holes. Make sure they are clear.

Do you have a man engine number and brand? I can look it up and see if it's one I've fooled with and I can maybe give you some pointers of where to check.

GP97, are you still around Fritztown? Seems I read you're no longer working in K'ville.

Moved from Kerrville/Fbg area to the Lubbock area.

Got tired of taking call. It's been a good move for us.

It's a Chinese build…GY6, I believe
