Throwing my rec out there... Atwood palm straw. Best straw hat I've ever owned.

I'll second that. I've been wearing them for over 25 years now.

I haven't bought a new straw in 15 years. Of course 15 years ago I bought 7 hats when they quit making my 5" style. Had they lady at Herb's Hat shop in San Antonio call the factory and get everyone they had in stock in my size. She couldn't believe I bought that many at once.

I have 1 left in the box. Guess I need to start looking for my new style. . .

Atwood doesn't make these anymore? These are also what I wear. Still have a couple that are in good shape, but would be disappointed if they're not available anymore.

I think the style I wear now is called the Buckaroo. I don't know if they make it now, but when I bought those several years ago, the lady said they discontinued that style. I have never double checked her story, but thought her information reliable as she and her dad (Herb) had been in the business many years. I also have not looked for a new hat as I still have one in the box, one for Sunday go to meetin' and one worn daily.

If they do still make this style in the 5", I probably need to go buy a few to last me the rest of my life. I find more often the styles I like are being discontinued and no longer available. This is not an option for me as my hat is part of my personality (so I've been told). Someone awhile back did a thread on "What brand are you?" and I used Atwood as my brand as it is one of the most distinguishing physical characteristics I have next to being a little larger than the average Joe at 6'1" and 260#.

Yes, Herb as in Herb's Hat Shop.

Although Herb has been gone 10-12 years now, one of the daughters still works there(two of them used to).

I met Herb and his Wife Pat at a district Lions club meeting in Kerrville where she was elected district President years ago (~2004). Pat passed somewhere around 2009. Really nice folks.

The shop has been sold, but retains the name.
Last time I went in to get one of my hats shaped, they had changed their stock so they didn't have as many of the "older" styles and non-shaped/styled hats. Most of the hats on display were pre-shaped for the "trendy" crowd. I guess they probably sell more of those anyway.

Damn. Those are my hat guys but they only work on my old hats. I was in there a couple of years ago and they had a lot of ready to shape on the table. Are those gone? Bummer if so.

My dad and all of his deputies use to go to Herbs to get their hats. They would go to Herbs and then to Littles Boot Shop to get boots. Then to Kaufman's to get uniform stuff. It was their " Go to the big town trip".
Then all go to eat lunch at Jim's Coffee Shop because they gave LEO's a discount.

I didn't learn this until this past Christmas but my dad and Herb apparently started a hat shop together back in the 60s or maybe early 70s out of the back of a gas station. Wish I knew more about it. I'm sure he wishes he had stuck with it like Herb did. They worked together at the phone company.

Yeah it's harder to shape a summer hat than it is a felt. Most people do a terrible job. Catalena is excellent.
Yep Pete & Sammy Catalena were great men. The Catalena family are great people and run a top notch business.

Yeah I live in the Coastal Bend. We have no real hatters. Used to be a good one in Victoria. Had one starting up as Chiltipin Creek hatter but he had a rough start, may need to give him a 2nd chance. I've been going back to Bryan for hats. Hard to find a decent hatter.

Best Hat Store or Jobes Hats in the DFW area.

American Hat Co. has the best straws and best felts hands down.

Bought a Bangora hat this spring, $35 dollars and a great straw. Love it better than my Resistol Straw.

Always wore Bangora's when I was young. If I were to purchase another "straw" that would be my choice. They were always cheap and still are.

Today, unfortunately, many Americans have good reason to fear that they will be victimized if they are unable to protect themselves. And today, no less than in 1791, the Second Amendment guarantees their right to do so. - Justice Samuel Alito 2022
