What would yall recommend as a good spot to base camp (tent) to fish for trout in Colorado for a week in October? Plan would be to fish multiple rivers / streams over the week and these don't have to be the blue ribbon rivers that always popup up in a "best of" search.

You want rivers or streams or both? Gunnison gets you close to a little bit of everything.
Gunnison would be a good choice because you could go north and fish the Taylor Fork of the Gunnison. You could go South and fish the Lake Fork of the Gunnison towards Lake City. You could also go to Powder Horn turn left and follow Cebolla Creek and fish it in many places. I have caught many good Browns in the state wildlife campground area as well as on up the creek.

Gunnison is also only ~1.5 hours over the divide from the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area. Lots of opportunities there too.
And the trophy waters on the lower part of the Black Canyon
We went in May for a week and tent camped out of Eleven Mile Canyon. Lots of rivers and streams around there, plus a couple lakes. I think we fished somewhere new everyday, even had the ability to hit somewhere in the morning and then somewhere else in the afternoon.
Gunnison. Have the Taylor, East and Slate, Spring and Cement creek and multiple others. I do recommend a float trip through Gunnison starting by garlic mikes and ending near the airport. Spring Creek reservoir has a couple a camp sites and it's relaxing as all get out, using flies or spinners. Taylor park gets a little crowded. Got back a couple weeks ago and can't wait to go back.

Closet town would be Creed and it's a 30 miles and an hour drive from there. Located near the headwaters of the Rio Grande on the Rio Grande. With several drainages with a variety of creeks all right there in the near area.
The con would be it's at 9,300' ft.
