They switched to the pending 1st draw terminology, its new, it just means that draw hasn't been conducted yet.

Not all hunts have a secondary draw.

I'm gonna apply for some turkey hunts and I have 7 pts.

If I apply with a buddy do yall think we can get drawn as a group or only way to get drawn is a single hunter applying?

If your buddy doesn't have any points and you have 7, if you apply together your "group" will have 4 points toward the draw.

I gave up on these a few years back. How does the system work to determine if you are even close to being drawn. Is this like a donation annually for a decade until you finally have a chance of even being drawn? I'd like to know the skinny.

They started cubing points to further preference people with points. i.e. 1 point = 1 chances in the drawing, 2=8, 7=343 chances in the drawing.

So definitely a much lower chance now if you are just starting. Also need to be more careful about burning points. I used to not care and apply for everything in a hunt type. i.e. Archery Deer, but now you may really blow some points on an easy to draw hunt.

Definitely try to apply for each hunt type once per year to continue to add points.

Under the old system - it took me 25 years to get drawn on the Chap. I don't have much of a problem with the cubed system as it will eventually reward those people with a draw. For all you folks that don't like losing out on higher odds early - there were folks that had put in for 25-30 years that were losing out to those lucky folks.

I get the actual draw results / odds for select categories every year and will do it this year. I suspect that we are in a bit of a "clearing out" phase where there were more folks with high preference points that are getting drawn - so hopefully the number of points moves down a bit.

They should just charge the out of state folks 10X more to put in for a draw.

INIGO, have you asked how many out of staters apply? I have always wanted to know how many we compete with. Is it 50%, only 10%??

well looks like it is my lucky day! Headed back for another deer/nilgai bowhunt at Lower Rio Grande Valley- Teniente on 12/4-12/7. My last hunt down there was LRGV-Shalaben a few years ago and the only 4 guys who showed up for the hunt were 4 Aggies who are here on Texags which was pretty cool. I hunted Teniente on my first ever draw hunt back in 2019 and had good luck in shooting 2 nilgai, bad luck in not finding either. Tracked one for 3/4 mile in the dark before giving up after finding a massive rattlesnake den in the middle of the night and deciding it just wasn't worth it. Time for redemption.

I'll ask about OOS percentage.

Regarding youth - it used to be such that if you started putting in early for your kids, you had a decent chance of getting drawn at the Chap before they aged out. My oldest got drawn for that and one other - youngest didn't get drawn at all.

I drew Lower Rio Teniente Archery for early Jan. Had a blast at LANWR last year so this one should be fun also.

I've been getting the normal TPWD spam emails but did not receive an email notification for getting drawn and did not receive anything after paying for my permit.

I haven't paid yet, but I looked back at last year and it looks like my permit email came about a minute after the payment receipt each time. Check your spam I guess. You might be able to download the permit from the TPWD draw results page too.

The selection congratulations email came the day of the draw and it was from PHS TPWD no reply.
We didn't get an email until the day before the hunt with the actual details

Update... I just now received my email notification that I was drawn yesterday and also got a separate email with my permit and hunt info.

I've hunted there 4 times in the past 6 years including last year with my son on the youth hunt. Unfortunately, I've never shot a deer there so probably not the guy to get advice from. Passed lots of does and even a nice legal buck once bc I had a big nontypical about 80 yards away working a scrape. Every time I've hunted there the conditions have been miserably hot. My best spots where I've seen some really good deer are so far back into the thick stuff I didn't even try to take my own son in there. We saw quite a few deer last year and almost got run over by a group of pigs that came up behind our ground blind within about 10' but didn't see any legal bucks.

Lots of snakes, mosquitos and an unbelievable amount of pigs. If you don't have an ATV they'll put you in one of the areas up front where there are a lot of open areas. If you do have an ATV you'll likely draw a compartment south of the road back towards the river.

Finding oaks dropping can be good for seeing animals but end of October may be a little late for that. Most oaks are along the creeks.

If you bring corn, just know that the pigs will likely find it and scare everything else away. So if you want to shoot pigs, dump a 50lb bag of corn out and just give it time. They will find it. I've never had luck with baiting for deer there.

Sweet! I can't find much info on the WMA so I called. We can hunt anywhere in the designated compartment, and they have a blind set up as well. Deer density isn't quite where they want it, so opportunities may not be as prevalent as other places. That's all the info I've been able to collect so far.

Rifle hunted aoudad there Dec. 2023. Saw a few deer. Jumped a nice buck. Didn't see any aoudad. There are lots of hogs there. Pretty cool place.
