Neighbors cow had this happen to them. Pack of dogs or yotes? These are F1s, so not a short animal to get on the rump. Tail has a lot of marks as well.

More than likely dogs as coyotes and lions usually go for the neck area first.

Curious, did the injury happen in the corral or out in the pasture?

Out in the pasture.

They brought them in to doctor it up.

Top wound looks like a gouge from jagged limb or getting hooked on an old piece of farm equipment possibly while being chased or spooked. Not in corral eliminates being cornered and crashing through board fence. Interesting wounds, sure would like to know how that happened.

Would a horse be able to do this?

Yes. You could be on to something. Donkey or mule also.

Been around ranch horses and mules/donkeys most of my life. Horses (especially stallions) will bite to establish dominance. Also rare up to use their front hoofs and rear for kicking. I have never seen such a wound on a horse from them biting one another such as this.

No idea what did cause the wounds, but am certain it wasn't coyotes nor dogs. Strange indeed. Tend to agree they were self inflicted somehow.

we once had a jack that would pick up calves by the neck and throw em around like a chew toy. my dad never allowed any equine with his cattle since

Jacks are territorial and will also react to a mare in heat the same as a horse stallion….. Jacks are funny that way. Jenny's don't do that.

If dogs, the cow would have injuries to the ears, head/ neck area. Do any of those cows have horns?
ETA Cows will fight with their head and without horns they will lose to attacking dogs. We have added some F1 horned cows to this pasture and have been proactive about nuisance dogs so no problems after the changes.
