I've said this before, but I've never heard someone say, "I wish I'd bought a smaller log splitter."

Ryobi 40v splitter. 12-ton

It's a kinetic splitter and mine has split 15-18" mesquite and post oak with no problem.

You get approx 150 splits per charge. I have a couple extra batteries and keeping the charger with me, it will run as long as I am able.

How many ton should I be looking for? I have one that goes on the tractor but that can be a pain, I wouldn't mind having an electric one if they work well.

I would never say anything below 20 ton. People have claimed that a 10 or 12 ton have split their oak and pecan with no problems, but I've seen a 12 ton barely make a dent in seasoned oak. Maybe I just have bad luck with them, who knows.

The kinetic splitters look interesting, and given how they operate i can see a lower tonnage being able to split what takes more pressure on a traditional hydraulic. But I have no experience with them. I just got one that hooks to my tractor hydraulics so I don't have another engine to deal with. If I'm splitting wood, I'm going to be on the tractor anyway so it works.

The one on the tractor works great, but it would be nice to have an electric one I could leave in the woodshed. I will have to look into the kinetic ones as most of the electric splitters I have seen seem to be lower tonnage. I am not interested in gas powered and adding another small engine to maintain. Honestly this whole thing is born of laziness on my part not wanting to disconnect whatever is on the tractor, hook up the splitter and drive over there to split wood.

I 100% understand the laziness part. If it were up to me, I'd have a separate tractor for each implement.
