Checked cameras this weekend and looks like one of our oryx cows had an albino calf. It's about two months old now and doesn't have a spot of color on it. Nose and horns are pink tinted as well.

Hope it doesn't break off and becomes an awesome trophy.

Very cool. Do you know if it's a bull or cow? Be interesting if you knew which bull bred that cow. We had an Addax albino baby cow. ….If that particular bull breeds that particular cow again she may throw another one…..that happened with our Addax.
Will be interesting to see if he/she develops any color at all as winter sets in.
Thanks for sharing this.

Our herd is pretty small right now with a single bull and this cow only has a single horn as she broke off the other in transport when we bought her. It will be interesting to track the matchup again. Hoping the baby is a cow as I need more baby makers than another bull right now.

Yes sir. Will be cool if the baby is a cow so you can build your herd up. Good luck to you. May it all go well for you.

Cute baby.
We have a small herd and hoping for some more babies this next year. Fun animals to have.

Agree…it has been neat watching them in the pasture. We started with blackbuck and the predators decimated them. Got the oryx after that and figured they would be too big for anything to mess with.

Could that be freeze/ cold damage to the ears?

Scimitars, Addax, Gemsbok ….males and females alike, will jack with one another for dominance around feeders,
mineral blocks, or even sometimes when just grazing. They oftentimes nip at the ears and tails doing this. We had an Addax herd where half of them had the tips of their ears and tails bit off….especially the older animals. It's more prevalent seems like with females.

That's interesting, I had no idea. Do y'all have all three species on your place? Curious about inbreeding across species if so. I know Scimitar and Gemsbok will cross but wasn't sure about Addax.

We did have Gemsbok and Addax but in two separate places.
We had Scimitars first before we got rid of them and got Addax instead as the Scimitars were notorious for breaking their horns. Addax almost never do that in comparison.
Gemsbok and Scimitars are the same Genus…"oryx".
Addax are a separate Genus…."addax". But they are all three of the Bovidae family….and all three have been known to cross with one another if kept in close proximity in small pastures.
They don't cross in their native wild habitats due to the typical long distances between their natural habitats.
If kept in different pastures with just common fences separating them, they will fight through the fences and break horns and tear up your fences.
We kept our Addax and Gemsbok in two totally different places.
It is not good practice or ethical to put them together in the same pastures due to the chance of cross breeding. There is no benefit to crossbreeding them and it can destroy the pureness of the individual species if allowed.
Similar to what's happened to Elk and Red Dear in Texas…cross breeding has resulted in the dilution of the true species in both. Unless the herds are properly credentialed, it's almost impossible to obtain a pure Rocky Mountain Elk in Texas any longer due the crossing with Red Deer.
There are programs that are using herds of Addax and Scimitars in Texas to reintroduce them back into their native homeland habitats where they are endangered.
Keeping the gene pools pure in both those species is paramount to the success of those efforts.

Great information! We have talked about adding Addax so this is good to know. I agree with you on all points and think each species has something special to offer that you would then lose once they begin crossing.

I will also add that Gemsbok and Scimitars are more aggressive than Addax. We had instances of Scimitar bulls killing baby donkeys….another reason we quit messing with them. Gemsbok can be even more aggressive than Scimitars. .
