I woke up today and realized my wife and I have not done a vacation with just the two of us in over five years. What are some of the OB's best vacation spots for a long weekend within a 10 hour drive from Houston? We would be leaving on a Friday and coming home on a Tuesday so the shorter the drive the better. Going to go sometime in July but not the weekend of the 4th.

We like to do outdoor stuff - hiking, lakes, beaches, etc.

Hard to get anywhere with good weather in July in 10 hours from Houston. Would you consider flying ?

July outdoors means water. River, lake, or beach. Camp Wood and the Nueces River. Or South Padre. Or Destin. I don't have a good weekend lake recommendation because I hate crowds.

I was looking at flights to Myrtle Beach but flights are crazy expensive right now. Would defiantly be willing to fly if there is a highly recommended location and the flights are reasonable.

Fly to Durango, CO Hike or Mtn Bike the ski runs at Purgatory Mtn Resort, Take the train to Silverton for the day, Drive over the pass to Ouray, CO ( neat Mtn Town call themselves the Switzerland of America). Beautiful this time of year and not hot! Lows in the 50's /Highs in the high 80's but its dry MTN air.

Drive to Cloudcroft NM. The weather will be in the 70s and maybe low 80s. Very low humidity. Tons of trails for hiking.

It is slightly more than 10 hours.

I would not drive from Houston to Cloudcroft for a weekend trip. That's a west Texas destination.

Fly to Denver and drive to Estes Park.

Hop a short southwest flight to cancun and do an all inclusive. Great one on one time with the missus, relaxing, no cooking, cleaning, or driving. Even if you don't drink, you can relax and read a book on the beach or float in the pool.

Maybe not an option, but can it wait until October? Fall vacations are awesome because its way less touristy most places because of school, weather is cooler, and gives you a few months to plan.

Charleston. All the plantations, the forests, Bulls Island and the Boneyard Beach, the fossil hunts (expensive though).

I love Charleston as a vacation spot as well. But it is going to be wicked hot and sticky this time of year.

This was my first choice but out of driving range and flights are like $1,200. Might end up being the ticket

Broken Bow is really nice now if you like newer remote cabins, yet close enough to brewery/bar/winery/food. We go several times a year but it's because we're in DFW and it's less than 3 hours away.

If you really don't mind driving (I love long road trips) you can get to Indian Lodge in Fort Davis in under 9 hours.
Sure, it's Summer, but Summer in the west TX mountains, at over 5,000 ft is >>>>>> Houston Summer.

Leave early Friday, get there in time for dinner. See the stars.
Have all day Sat - Mon.
Several things to do around Alpine.
Balmorhea is less than 40 minutes away and the pool is about 74 degrees year round.

All that to say, Indian Lodge books up months in advance so it may be tough to get a room in July. But cancellations do happen.

What about those mountains just outside of Houston that I saw on the World Cup Studio broadcast?
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

That's true and no see ums are worse than mosquitoes IMO.

Damn are they really? I swear before COVID (we actually had a trip there in April of 2020 that we had to cancel) they were $400ish.

Gulf Shores is pretty fun and not that far from Houston.

Or Broken Bow.
I don’t say this in a braggedocious way. But it’s true. I’ve been right about everything.

If I lived in Houston, I'd be hitting Gulfport 2-3x a year minimum. Of course, friends of mine have a house there and are there 3-4 weeks at a time probably 5-ish times a year, but even if they weren't, I'd still find somewhere to stay. Really nice area, and the weather is at least decent in the winter.

Just a pain to get there from where I am, but that's just me.

Houston to Fort Lauderdale area flights are $200 round trip, find a nice cheaper place to stay and you can have a nice vacation for very little money. You can literally stay in hotels that are under $400-$500 for 4 nights in that area, if you pay a few hundred $ more or double that amount you can find a very decent beach type hotel and be on the water ….

NW Arkansas is really nice. Lots of trails, especially if you like to bike.

Another vote for Broken Bow as well. We always have a blast going there, even when it's crowded.

Could also look at someplace like Chattanooga Tennessee

You have fall creek falls to the north, ruby falls in town, pretty cool aquarium, neat downtown, cloud land canyon to the south in north Georgia which is a cool park.

Or Guntersville, Alabama pretty cool little town on the water and Cathedral Canyon just to the north.

You said within a 10-hour drive, but I would encourage you to look at flights.

My wife and I are taking a long weekend in August to fly to Denver where we will rent a car and drive to Rocky Mountain National Park for a four-night backpacking trip.

Lake Tahoe. You can fly to Reno nonstop out of Austin then nice drive to the lake.

Seriously, if you haven't taken your wife on a vacation in 5 years, and you have a valid passport, get on a plane to an all-inclusive resort in Mexico. I find it hard to relax, even on vacation, my mind says we need to get up and get moving. Cancun is the only place I've been where sitting around doing nothing actually made sense to me. Find a resort that doesn't allow kids, has good food and you'll have a great time. Secrets Resorts have a number of those all over Mexico and I'd definitely go back.

I'd look at Grand Cayman over Mexico for a quick beach vacation. More expensive but super easy direct flight from IAH and much nicer. Lots of resort options along Seven Mile Beach and amazing dining options. Mid summer is also the middle of Mexico's sargassum season as well. If Mexico is in the cards, Isla Mujeres is usually shielded from the sargassum.

I can't imagine taking a long weekend trip but spending half of it driving. Unless you just really like driving and plan several stops on the way Griswold style.

10 hours from Houston can mean you go all the way to Destin or you may get as far as Seguin. I'd find a cool spot you can fly to on SW for cheap and go there and figure things out, but that's me. I don't go on vacation to hike or bike or work out or any of that stuff, others apparently do.
