Kirby & Richmond? Wasn't it a Ninfas for over 15 years?

I really wanted Maggie Ritas to make it. Carlos Mencia was a genius trailblazing pioneer in the comedian/restaurant game.

forgot about Maggie Ritas. What a complete joke that place was.

Still one open in the tunnels if you like eating a plate full of grease in the dark and wanting to take a nap the rest of the workday…

Pico's is soon to be no mas.

Have to give them credit - I feel like they lasted longer there than anyone else.

Went there once, got the enchiladas suizas...very mediocre and it was like they topped it off with Mott's apple sauce...swore I'd never go there again. The place had only been open for a few weeks, and maybe it was just an off day, but it was so bad I almost took it personal.

Picos has a good sized marg for $10 and delicious flatuas - I'll miss it!

Yeah, something about that salsa bothered me. Everything seemed kind of bland and plain. Haven't been back in a couple years now. Surprised it made it over a decade.

Picos is more Mexican food, not Tex-Mex. Very similar, but different. I think they advertised they were "mex-mex". It's been a few years, but I've eaten there maybe a dozen times, usually during lunch since I used to work near there. I enjoyed the food but remember it being overpriced.

Savoir making a comeback.

https://houston.culturemap.com/news/restaurants-bars/savoir-restaurant-jose-hernandez-reopening/

Quote:

A veteran Houston chef is reviving a well-located Heights restaurant. Savoir will reopen under the leadership of chef Jose Hernandez.

The chef is a well-known figure on Houston's culinary scene. A veteran of restaurants such as Triniti, Etoile, and Berg Hospitality, Hernandez earned acclaim for Lucinne, a restaurant at the since-closed Hotel Alessandra. In 2022, he acquired downtown French restaurant Brasserie du Parc from Etoile owners Philippe Verpiand and Monica Bui.

Hernandez tells CultureMap that he enjoyed his visits to Savoir and was sad when it closed in March. When he was approached about operating the restaurant, he decided to take it on.

Rather than the French fare he's known for at Brasserue du Parc, Hernandez plans to serve the Mediterranean-style cuisine that Savoir was known for. That includes both house-made pastas and pizzas.

Savoir will begin a quiet soft opening this week with a limited menu while Hernandez completes hiring a new staff to operate the restaurant. Plans for Patton's, Savoir's companion, speakeasy-style steakhouse, are still being finalized.

A grand opening date and regular hours will be announced soon.

Interesting. I saw people in there on Friday and Saturday evening.

Was wondering if they were working on opening back up or just doing something for White Linen.

The new Kirby Ice Warehouse on the North Loop opens tomorrow.

Thinking of taking 300 of my closest friends over for an intimate gathering.

Soft opening was yesterday. When I left at 530, it was already getting very busy.

You and your 300 friends may be only 1/3 of tonight's crowd

Even starting construction over a year later, it's probably open before The Pizza Place

There is also going to be a small bar upstairs. Agreed that it will most likely be done before The Pizza Place.

$50+/sqft + NNN eating people alive on the lease costs. Hard for unknown restaurants to make an entrance, and just as hard for established places to keep up.

Yeah really sucks about Ostia. It's such a great space - I'm assuming something else will go in there. But yeah, it's really high dollar rent...

Owning a bar or restaurant doesn't sound like that much fun when they're trying to haggle w/ a landlord over AC replacement/repair in the middle of a general Summer slowdown. I've heard a couple people talking about trying to make it through another Summer.

Unless something has changed, he is planning on reopening it as a different concept.

That's sad. Wasn't real special food, but it's a cool place and I always like the idea of independent restaurants surviving.

On a lighter note....

  • A restaurant owned by former Houston Rockets player James Harden has been locked out due to non-payment of rent.
  • According to a notice posted on the restaurant's door, the restaurant owes over $2.2 million.
  • It's unclear when, or if, the restaurant will reopen.

How the **** do you let a tenant go $2.2MM delinquent on rent? How much was he paying for that place, in what I wouldn't consider all that great of an area of town?

The kids are dip****s, imo.

Was talking to a friend who was turned away the last three times he went because they didn't have a reservation. Never mind the restaurant was less than half full. Nor could they say sorry, with reservations the wait is an hour. Just said nope, have to have a reservation, bye.

Then there's the fact that I have no idea who would actually make a reservation to go there. It's a walk in type place. I'm not going to think about going there even a couple days in advance to make a reservation…..

I think Nundini's closed recently too, when we finally made it to eat at the restaurant I expected a little better food.

Gelato was always good though.
