Someone in the other thread stated the family that donated the land could take it back because it was donated specifically to be a park.

Normally I'd agree that it sucks to lose park space, but this plot is kind of an odd offshoot of the main Hermann Park. Its not really tied in or connected to the rest of the park in any way. Its just a plot of land with trees and a few random sidewalks. I guarantee you almost no one here as stepped foot on that patch of the park unless you had one of the worst golf shots of your life and sliced it over Cambridge while trying to crush a shot on a Par 3 hole 3 at the Hermann Park golf course.

It literally says that in the first sentence in the link and screenshot shared.

Aren't they taking away 9 holes from the course for this?

I don't see why the golf course is impacted by this. If the golf course is downsizing it is a separate decision.

no, that had nothing to do with this, and I think that proposal is currently dead in the water because everyone was all up in arms because LOL poors would lose access to play golf for a year while it was being re-done.
What do you boys want for breakfast BBQ ?.....OK Chili.

It's not even part of the golf course, and the proposed site is on the other side of Cambridge. It's a random patch of grass with a few trees and some benches that, let's be honest, mostly just get used by a couple of bums catching a nap.

The way some of y'all are reeeeing about this, you would think they are proposing to pave over the golf course and bulldoze the zoo.

I think the "reeee" comes from the fact that the commissioners are attempting to repurpose a gift that had explicit guidelines and ramifications for an alternative use.

Exactly. I used to run by there on the way to and from the park and Rice. Grass, trees, and some of the last Spanish moss left in the med center.

Most people have never seen or used the section that's proposed for the Ben Taub expansion. And the expansion is necessary.

It's been discussed to death for months.

If they are large oak trees then they should stay and the poors and blacks with gunshot wounds can deal with the current Ben taub and like it.

If they are leaving the golf course alone, I am great with it. That course attracts some awful golfers and it is nice to keep them all in one place. Shut it down and they scatter to all the other courses.

It is one of two level 1 trauma centers in the region. Hopefully, you won't ever get in a major car accident and need to be life-flighted there.

I was playing a lightning round after work out there by myself one day, prob about 12-13 yrs ago. I was pushing the cart through the fairway of par 5 hole #13 when a super tall black homeless man approached me with a bag full of range balls, which he had clearly collected from the range net about 30 yards away from us. He desperately tried to sell me some and I politely declined and explained that I only play a specific brand of ball. He was not happy but he didn't get aggressive or anything.

I finish that hole, set up on the tee box of the next hole (par 3) hear a little commotion and then look up and see that that bum, and a few of his bum friends were openly shooting up in the gazebo directly in front of me. I then struck it pure and landed the ball about 6-7 ft from the cup.

Still not as crazy though as the time several muslim ladies in full garb with only eyes showing would not get off of the green on hole #12. I walked in from about 150 yds out to politely try to explain that I was playing golf and that it was not safe for them there and they didn't budge. I go back out to my ball, take a few practice swings and then wave my arm to motion for them to get away and yell "please move or you might get hurt", to which they responded by yelling at me and making weird gestures. I hit into them and then they started scattering like they wer back home and air raid sirens were going off.

Still not as crazy though as the time I was walking through the fairway of hole #1 and I hear the approaching sound of cop sirens, I turn around to see a multiple squad cars and then see that they are chasing a black youth on a dirt bike. He jumps onto the course and guns it through the fairway towards me...I sh** you not, he slows down a bit and waves and says "sorry!" with a nervous smile on his face and then guns it straight through to the other side of the course. I was actually pulling for him to get away.

Cliff's notes...Hermann Park is nuckin futs. All of these things happened while I was playing late afternon rounds by myself too, so it's basically like they didn't happen.

Harris County leaders took a major step toward expanding one of Houston's busiest hospitals, despite ongoing controversy over how the project could impact nearby green space.

In a unanimous 4-0 vote, the Commissioners approved moving forward with the expansion of Ben Taub Hospital using eminent domain.

Yep, it's a ghetto honeypot. I assume everyone saw the vid from a few yrs back of that bum crankin it upside down in a sand trap in broad daylight?

I do wish I had been able to capture video of the 3rd Ward Dirt Bike Kid hitting me with some manners as he evaded the cops though. It was surreal. Like he at least knew enough about the ethics of the game to slow down to about 15-20 and apologize as he buzzed past me and my ball.

What, exactly, always starts with "just a patch of grass?" Are you talking about urbanization in general?

I don't care which patch of grass it is or how insignificant. The family DONATED the land under condition it would be used as a park, and only a park. The county accepted the terms and sure as **** accepted the gift. End of story.

Let that be a lesson to anyone trusting government with gifted resources.

Hermann Park Conservancy is spending $200m to update and improve the park and nothing has been planned for that area. They are using other park land to build parking garages without any push back.

The land isn't used. There's no plan to use it. The point was to benefit Houstonians. That isn't happening. But don't let that stop a good rant.

My problem with this is that they are using eminent domain. They will have to pay "fair market" value. I'm sure in their budget the value is for restricted undeveloped land. But now the land could revert to the descendants without restriction. Meaning the fair market value blows up, leading to cost overruns, and taxpayers footing the bill.

Its already over budget without breaking ground. But like posters have said, its just a patch of grass.

Don't worry, the Texas pipeline industry is way ahead of this issue. Every real Eminent Domain bill has been defeated by the Tx Legislature or the Tx Governor. The last good eminent domain bill passed the Tx House by 80 percent and passed the senate unanimously. Then it was vetoed by Rick Perry. HB 2006 in 2007 iirc.

We drove past this plot every day for 90 days while my daughter was in the NICU at Children's MH. I always wondered why such a plot of land sat there with no one ever on it. Totally disconnected and disassociated from the main park.

FYI she's 2 now…

What's a better use than the condition in which the family who actually donated the land wanted it to be used as?

The "better use" is exactly the use that George Hermann stipulated when he donated the land to the City.
