well, that seems to confirm the puncture came from the outside in. but still can't fathom how that then projectiled perfectly back upwards through the bed

My money is still on puncture outside-in with an item long enough to damage the wheel while still partially remaining outside, but then flung back out the way it came which went up thru the bed.

That or al qaeda sniper

My wife replicated the tire/wheel destruction combo today. No magic bullet theory, just some metal road debris that she "never saw".

When it rains it pours. But Lord knows it could have been worse with my wife and 4 kids all in the same minivan-basket experiencing a front tire rapid deflation on the Hardy Toll Road. HCTRA was on the scene to block a lane and throw on the donut before I could summon AAA. A trip today to the local pick-a-part sourced a replacement OEM wheel and tomorrow a trip to Discount will test out the road hazard warranty on that two week old Michelin Defender. Stressed but blessed.
